Worst Foods You Can Eat With The Gastric Sleeve

For some weird reason WHITE bread or WHITE ROLLS...I can eat a biscuit, or mini wheat bun, but nothing WHITE it's so weird. But it's OK not good for me anyway.

Early on I was lactose intolerant. Lucky for me that went away by about the 6th week or so. Now I can eat anything in moderation. I can have a little "dumping" with too much sugar, which I try to use in only small amounts. Read up on cocoanut... it can really cause you problems....search it here...

im only 2 weeks out but so far havent had any issues with anything.. i found that with the cream o wheat if i had to big of a bite that it almost felt like it was getting stuck in my throat and didn't want to go down so i figure either add more liquid next time or smaller bites.. lol.. thankfully haven't had any issues with sugar or milk. but i think it mostly depends on the person.. some will have issues others wont.. im just hopin for the best.. good luck to you

Shannonbcaldwell-Can't speak about the white bread-not into that. But I have had very small amounts of Pasta and didn't have a prob. There are lots of things you can substitute if you are really into Pasta, spaghetti squash. Personally I like to use zucchini-I pour spaghetti sauce over it, or make lasagna with it. My doctor does allow sandwich thins (made by orowheat and other companies) I like the Whole Wheat, but it does come in white. Works good for sandwiches/burgers (although I can only eat 1/2 of one). I also spray with spray margarine and then toast it and have it with an egg occasionally. I try not to have bread type carbs more than once or twice a week tho.

I never thought I could do the no bread thing either. I thought Garlic Bread was one of the 4 basic food groups. But since the first weeks post-op you can't have ANY breads, I realized that I could do it.

I'm sure you'll do fine. Just hang in there and think about everything you CAN have (or do) now that you will be thinner and healthier and not about the few things you can't have anymore.

Ft. Myers High School...c/o '90.................yes, lots and lots of cold beverages had on weekdays down on the beach between the Pier and the Lani Kai........too funny

OMG! My ex graduated from Ft. Myers High in '80 and I graduated in '81 so am a bit older than you. The LANI KAI!!!!! OMG! We use to hang out there all the time! They were notorious for not "carding" for ID's! beer_yum.gif I have family that still lives in Ft. Myers and actually stay at the Lani Kai from time to time! Too ironic that we met on here. I wish you all the best and hope to stay in contact with you through our journey to letting out that skinny person inside of us!!!

Everyone's tummy is different and everyone will react to food in different ways.. The one thing I've found consistent is the reaction to too much sugar.

You posted a good question....

well, everyone's different, the 'danger" foods for me are what my Dr said to stay away from, all breads, pasta's, sugar things, soda, basically foods that have no nutritional value. Since you have so little room now, keep in mind of what you put in your mouth. I just had my 6 month check up a few weeks ago, I've reached my 'goal" weight, and I thought the Dr would tell me that I now can have a few of those things i listed in moderation now..WRONG.....he told me nope....this food plan he gave to me is a way of life now, and i still and always should stay away from those "bad" or no no foods.. once you start back to eating those no no foods, it will be too hard to stop, and will most likley start putting back on some lbs again. so......i have to tell myself, I want to be thin, and I'll do what it takes to maintain that. and honestly, it's not that hard to eat Protein foods in place of the "bad' foods anymore. It goes back to the "choices" we make.

i'm speaking only for me, but I didnt pay all this money to have this procedure done just to swrew it up because i WANT a cheeseburger, chips, popcorn, or soda.

Best advice....follow the list of aproved foods from what your Dr, gave to you, and don't eat the foods you see on here that other ppl are eating. I'm often shocked to hear what some are eating.

....also i still can't handle any spice foods, but i never was a spicy foods fan b4 either.

I am slightly over 10 months post surgery and here are the things I avoid:

Too much raw celery - BAD SIDE EFFECTS - my rule is if a garbage disposal has trouble with it, limit the raw food to a very small amount. Cooked celery doesn't bother me. I don't go crazy with raw brocolli, cauliflower or cooked corn on the cob.

meat cooked dry (primarily beef). For example - BBQ'd brisket without drowning it in sauce tears me up. Although I can eat beef Jerky, which is wierd. Maybe it is the BBQ process. Makes me sick to my stomach for a couple of days.

"Fluffy" bread - I can eat a bite or maybe two - and that's it.

Same with pasta's. They feel like the swell up in my stomach and I don't like the feeling. Toast or crispbreads is OK.

Carbonated beverages - my sleeve doesn't like bubbles. Period.

Heavy, rich sweets - I from one to three bites then stop. Don't want anymore - my stomach doesn't seem to like rich stuff except in small quantities (although my mouth still enjoys it).

I am absolutely lactose intolerant for milk and ice cream. I can eat yogurt, cottage cheese and cheese with no problems.

I still choose to limit my carbs (Pasta, bread, rice, potatoes) to very little. I still want to lose ten pounds, so I stay more with Protein and veggies. Potatoes and rice don't cause me any problems to digetst, so I am going to eventually add those back in maintenance. Breads and Pasta will be limited forever I guess.

i can no longer eat eggs, having a hard time with fish, and nothing fried (yuck!) tastes have definetly changed. No problem with carbs though...

Can someone describe what dumping feels like? I have been having a hard time eating certain things and I am wondering if that could be it. I didn't know you could have dumping with this surgery.

I have a hard time with potatoes in any form, they are like a brick in there. UGH. Also too much sugar makes me feel like crap. Everything else works just fine.

Same here! I haven't had any type of bread in almost a month, and surprise surprise...I feel great, and I don't miss it all that much! I even walked by a bakery twice this week, and was totally okay...nothing in the window appealed to me!

As far as post op, I am a little over 3 weeks out, and the number one thing my stomach still loves is Greek Yogurt. It is the ONLY thing I did not have an issue with at first. eggs were my fave pre-op, but now I can only have on a good day, and even then, I still can't eat all of 1 egg scrambled. Soft chicken also took some time, but I think that's because I have been vegetarian up until recently on top of it. pureed low sodium Soup with chicken and veggies went ok, but Greek Yogurt is a main staple. Try to find one thing your sleeve loves, and base some meals around that!!

2 1/2 weeks post-op and on mushies. I used to live on Peanut Butter, so I slipped a small amount into my blended chocolate Protein Drink. I almost threw up, I was so nauseous. That's the only nausea I've had. Never again. Aaargh.

When I was on full liquids and soft foods, Cream of Wheat was my go-to! I couldn't wait to eat it lol. However, I also couldn't wait to get on soft foods so I could have the tasty cheese re-fried Beans everyone talked about. When I tried it, my tummy said "Nope! Not for me!" I was a little disappointed lol. But overall anything doughy and meat like steaks and ground beef sit very heavy for me and i'm 15 weeks out.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life.       Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

        Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
