Worst Foods You Can Eat With The Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I'm sure this thread has been posted before, however, I am a new sleever (Dec, 2011,) and I would like to know which foods five you battle hardened vets the most trouble. I would like to know the most dangerous of my old favorites that will cause me undue pain and suffering, and I don't mean weight gain. A couple days ago, on my 7th day post-op I was feeling pretty good and decided to have a tiny cup of Cream of Wheat..............WHHHOOOOAAAA, NELLLLIIIEE.

Big Mistake....I guess I flew too close to the Sun. I was sickernadawg. I would like to follow everything to the letter now, but would like input from you guys on what foods are the mist problematic with regard to dumping. Thank you and please be specific.

I'm 15 days post-op now and I'm finding that it's just trial and error but anything with milk seems to give me the most problems....like...bad problems! Good luck to you and btw...I'm from Ft. Myers!

I am 6 weeks out tomorrow and it just depends - trial and error - sometimes it is not the first time I eat something it is the second or third time that it doesn't sit well with me!

6 weeks out here. Been on regular foods for two weeks. Pure chocolate bothers me, spicy foods, fried foods (I can handle about 2 bites). Also things that are really sweet (lemonade, ice tea). Haven't tried popcorn yet. I hear some people handle it OK others don't. Lot's of people become lactose intolerant after surgery (I didn't). That might be the cream of wheat problem. My doctor also allowed cream of wheat right after surgery. Maybe you ate it too fast or took too big of bites. That will cause problems no matter what you are eating. Some people also are adversely affected by hot or cold temperature foods after surgery.

Don't eat sooner than your doctor recommends. if a food doesn't agree with you-try it again in a week or two. It just might agree with you then.

The only foods my doctor disallows permanently are squishy white breads, rolls. They can ball up in your sleeve, provide little nutrition and take up space that could be filled up with something more nourishing.

Everyone reacts slightly differently to different food, some work well and others not so much.

For me personally I have trouble with dairy products (other than cheese) and sugary food (good thing too).

bread feels like it balls up inside and swells--it hurts so I don't eat it anymore. Pasta also feels bad. chicken is usually too dry for me now but I can pretty much eat any other meat, including steak. I have lost my sweet tooth. In the early days "dumping" is usually from your poor gut being deprived of solids for a while and usually goes away as your tummy adapts again to food, but beware the first time you try something new post-op.

So far I haven't had any difficulties with specific foods, but like others plain breads definitely don't do me much good. Try adding in one new food at a time (either at a meal or in a day) - that way, if you do have difficulties, you'll be able to pinpoint what particular food bothered you.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Hopefully I will get many more. I am wondering if it was the brown sugar in the cream of wheat that hit me so hard? I hate the fact that white bread and Pasta might be no-no's even in moderation. I can do without the sugar, no prob, but oh well, i am committed, so, here it goes ..................... Hoping for as many replies as I can get !!

4 wks post op. I couldn't do cream of wheat but could do oatmeal. Somethings I can't eat, then if I try again a week later its fine. I couldn't do tuna at 3 weeks but then tried again today and it was fine. The only thing I found so far is Water. Won't go down no matter what, been trying for 4 wks and anything cold hurts like heck. It has to be chilled but not ice cold.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
