Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery Diet

Recommended Posts

I'm very curious as to what your post-op diet was. There are so many variations to it by different doctors. I think my doctor's office is super conservative. How long were you on clears? Full liquids? pureed? Thanks!

Just posted a question regarding my diet and how I can't eat all they ask Stage 2. I had 5 days Clear Liquids, 2 weeks full liquids, 4 weeks pureed, 4 weeks very soft solids. They did provide specific lists as to what foods they allow at each stage. Not many choices.

As I recall, I was on Clear Liquids for one meal, and then it was on to other liquids, puree and soft Proteins - I think that the second hospital meal was some broth, yogurt and scrambled eggs - and after that it was the liquid/mush/puree/soft proteins as tolerated at home for the next month. I tolerated things well and had no issues - nothing has come back up since surgery - though others progress more slowly. This is pretty much the same regimen that my wife was on about six years ago (our doc's practice has been doing sleeves for around twenty years) though she progressed a little more slowly, having a few more tolerance issues at first.

1 cup of healthy food 3 times a day for 6 months of supervised diet. No cheese, no caffeine, no carbonated beverages, no sweeteners, no bananas. Then 2 weeks of liquid diet before surgery.

Dr. Aceves does 10 days of clear liquids, 10 days of full liquids, then 10 days of mushie foods. Solids after that as tolerated but I can't remember how long it was before I was supposed to eat nuts or fresh veggies. I think it was 3 months?

1 week of clears, 1 week of full liquids, 2 weeks of mushies, beginning of 5th week I was allowed to start soft solids. I didn't try salad or nuts until about 3 months out. I've just added (4 months) some fruits, although nothing with small seeds like strawberries. I waited on steak and raw veggies until 3.5 months. .

I was on clear liquids for the first 5 days, then full liquids for a month (but my full liquids included soft cheeses like string cheese). Then a month of purees (which included canned chicken, tuna, etc.).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
