beachgirl 2 Posted July 26, 2006 Did everyone see the Today Show today. I missed it but my Grandmother who is the one that suggested I get the lap band and has been my biggest motivator as I worship the ground she walks on did see it and called me so I went to they're website and watched it. www.msnbc.com It was great. The Shelton family of 5 all had the lapband surgery done and have lost so far collectively over 500 pounds. It was very inspiring as the host stated well the surgery has a rate of 4% complications and here were 5 people that had it and none had any problems whatsoever and were losing. Everyone should check it out and watch it if you haven't already seen it.
fishy 0 Posted July 26, 2006 The same family was featured in the most recent issue of People. Apparently Dad is the rebel of the group, he doesn't want to give up his beer. :biggrin1: It's a cool story, especially about the brother, who has lost 200+ so far. socalgal3 4 Posted July 26, 2006 Thanks. I watched it and they said there is an article in People magazine this week too. I think they had VGB? Not lapband.
Stitchy 0 Posted July 26, 2006 I just watched it too. They definately said VGB. But, it's still getting information out there.
barbara465 2 Posted July 26, 2006 You can go to www.nbc.com and choose news shows and pick Today. You can run the entire film clip of the interview session. They say they had a Gastric Band around the stomach. It was interesting and will look at the People magazine when it comes on Friday.
GettingHealthyAgain 1 Posted July 26, 2006 I believe that all five had the lapband surgery, but the Today show host referred to it as laparoscopic gastric banding (I think)...isn't that the same as the lapband? Julie
diva 0 Posted July 26, 2006 I just saw it-they didn't explain anything about the band at all except its a plastic band that makes your stomach smaller. They also asked them if they were concerned that "4 out of 10 people have complications" HUH???? Anybody know that particular statistic???
clovermeg 2 Posted July 27, 2006 It was definitely VGB that they referred to and 40% (4 out of 10 complication rate) that CANNOT be the lap band....I don't even think the slip rate is that high!
diva 0 Posted July 27, 2006 I didn't think the band was well represented on the show or People magazine.
Penni60 45 Posted July 27, 2006 So the Shelton Family was on the TODAY show this morning? If so I have clicked all around the site and can't seem to find the segment mentioned. Can someone please put the link to the correct segment?
diva 0 Posted July 27, 2006 They make it a real pain to find. Go to nbc then to news then to Today Show-scroll down on the right side you'll see the week's netcast click on Wednesday-it will take you to all the videos. There is probably an easier way. beachgirl 2 Posted July 27, 2006 Penni, Go to http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032633/, then click on family drops 500 pounds, on the right towards the bottom and you can watch the entire interview. Hugs,

Hi Diva - my doctor's office says that when looking at the statistics, it's important to remember that the complication rate varies tremendously depending on the experience of the doctor doing the surgery. My doc's office (in Fresno, CA) reports a much, much lower complication rate than the general average. Plus, we need to know more about what was considered a "complication" - are they talking issues that require hospitalization, or just discomfort, like PBing? Goannabanda 0 Posted July 27, 2006 Notebook magazine here in Australia published an article in this months edition about Anissy Levy, an aussie who got LapBanded. she and the LapBand were well represented and very inspiring. She sounds like an intelligent lady - and the article in no way made little of obese people's problems.
