Drastic Weight Loss Within First Month

Recommended Posts

As happy as I am seeing my weight just vanish, i'm a little concerned that its unhealthy. I'm exactly 30 days post my surgery now having lost 75 pounds in the last 45 days (incl. pre op loss)! My 2 nights in the hospital were pretty uncomfortable but that was expected. So were the following few days. But then I started feeling much better around a week later once my staples came off. I stuck with my liquid diet and kept sipping on as much Water as possible. I almost started feeling back to normal by week 3 but then all of a sudden this past week has just been absolute hell!

I've been visiting my surgeon regularly (weekly) to make sure that my diet is right and that there are no leaks. However since 7 days now i've been extremely dehydrated, nauseus and experiencing chest burn sometimes. I was put on saline in order to consume liquids and also did an xray to make sure there was no leakage. My doctor said this happens to some but very rarely. He said one of his patients suffered this for 2 months! Of course i've been forcing myself to sip as much as possible but most of the times it just comes back right out. I throw up thick sputum at least 5-7 times a day. Anything can trigger this vomit sensation such as a smell, a sip of water, or sometimes even a persons breath. Sometimes its even just sounds or images or thoughts that get me going. At first it was very painful as i've hardly ever puked in my life. But since the past 3-4 days i've gotten used to it. Obviously, this is something that I would NOT want to get used to. I feel very weak, even shake sometimes. And sometimes the pulling sensation while throwing up is so strong that I cant breathe till I suck on an ice cube. This past week has dirven me crazy and almost made me regret going through with the whole thing, and i'm someone who rarely ever regrets anything. I just hope this phase passes soon. I'd like to know if anyone here has experienced any of this and if you got any suggestions on how to fight it.

Finally, happy holidays to every one here.

Hey, are you on an acid reducer? I'm asking because it sounds like you need one. I, too, threw up every day for the first 2 months! When I started Prilosec, in about 2 days, I stopped throwing up and things normalized. I was able to stop it at 5 months, too, so now, no problems. I'm so sorry that you're having such a hard time--I completely understand about that feeling of being unable to breathe from the spasms!

Ask your surgeon about a PPI (Prilosec, Nexium, whatever)--if one of them doesn't work, try another, or try them in combination. Different acid reducers work in different ways, and if the first one you try doesn't help, definitely don't give up!!

Hang in there--hope things stabilize for you very soon. Happy holidays to you, as well!

That sounds horrible! I think the PPI sounds like a good place to start... I'm glad you are going to your Dr, but if he can't find anything, perhaps seek a second opinion? As you know, you have to keep getting your Water in... even if it means an IV now and then... dehydration can cause nauseusness....

I am so sorry your having all this difficulty. I believe this will get better for you. Hoping you just need something for acid reflex. :)

I had a friend who had problems like you are describing. She found out she was having

esophageal spasms. She had to slowly sip warm broth or liquids to soothe her esophagus. In between meals, she sucked on ice chips to keep herself hydrated.

I would think the first thing your surgeon would have done was prescribe an acid blocker.

Please keep us informed of your progress so that others can learn from this too. I am so sorry you're experiencing this and I hope it passes soon.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
