Sushi Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

My partner and I have a tradition of going out for sushi on my birthday every year. This is coming up in mid February, and by then I'll be 10 1/2 weeks post op. My surgeon's diet plan has me transitioning to a normal diet at 6 weeks.

I absolutely adore sushi. It's right up there with chocolate for me. My favorite parts are the nori (seaweed) and the rice, but not so much the raw fish or roe. That being said, what are people's recommendations for making sushi sleeve-friendly?

I am about four months out from surgery and I can eat about two pieces of sushi maybe three if I don't eat as much of the rice, I love the raw fish and the tempura shrimp. Everything settles fine with my sleeve but you might want to take it slow to start because I have read a lot of people have problems with rice because it swells in your sleeve. Eat slow and savor every morsel. I hope you have a blast on your Birthday!

My first sushi was one slice, the other eight I had to throw away. I'm the only one who enjoys sushi in my family, so I've only purchased it twice. I love ell sushi. The California roll hasn't any meat in it if you don't enjoy fish.

I ask for light rice, or just pick off most of it. Really can not eat more than 3 pcs.

Its my fave too!! if you like cooked crab try the spider roll, I had 4 small pieces over 45 mins at my sushi place the last time I went out. It was amazing and I even had a half a piece of my friends. It set well!!!

Good suggestions, everyone. Thanks! It makes me feel a little less apprehensive.

I'm sure I'll be a MUCH cheaper date at the sushi place this time around... before we would order 4 or 5 rolls between us, plus appetizers and saki! The bill was never less than $120.

I don't do sushi anymore, mostly because I loved it with wasabi and I can't do spicy anymore. I do like crab meat with a little cocktail sauce. I can't do rice yet. It does make me uncomfortably full, very quickly!!

Good luck and have a great birthday!! :)

As you can tell from my profile picture, I am a big fan of sushi (sorry Nemo fans). I am two months out from surgery and made my first visit to my favorite sushi place, a place I have gone to for over ten years. I, too, have eliminated rice from my currrent food plan. I started off with a bowl of Miso Soup, and waited 15 minutes (liquid quidelines) before ordering tuna Sashimi. Everything sat pretty well with me. I plan on trying the seafood dynamite the next time I go there. The best part of the dinner, however, was when I walked in and the manager came over to give me a hug and told me, in a very loud voice, how "hot" I looked. Boy was I embarassed when a number of customers turned around to see who had walked in. I've lost 52 lbs in two months, so people are shocked when they see me, the new me - YIPPY!

Have a great birthday and enjoy your sushi.

Order an appetizer. My fav sushi place has sushi and sashimi appetizers that are perfect. I also suggest you give raw tuna a second try - it's very much like medium rare steak in texture, very high in Protein and I have learned to love it!

I'm really glad to know that I will still be able to eat sushi, because I absolutely love it. My question is, how do you eat it? I imagine that you can no longer put a whole piece in your mouth, or you will be chewing forever. Do you cut each piece into smaller pieces?

I tend to like sashimi. I learned right before being sleeved that 3 oz of ahi tuna has 19 grams of Protein. I like it when they sear the inside and leave the inside raw. I don't think I'd miss the rice much. Slices of sashimi and maybe a few slices of avocado they use on that overdone California roll would be heaven to me.

Sushi is my favorite!! I would eat it everyday if I could afford it! Haha!! I have a standing Friday night date with my husband that my sleeve has not interfered with, only changed it a bit.

We used to get several pieces of nigori (fishy on top of rice) a few rolls, maybe a tuna poki appetizer, always miso and maybe veggie tempur app. Oh and beer and sake, a lot, I know!!

Now...I stick to edamame as an app, (no more miso, since Soups fill me up too much) and primarily sashimi. We might get one roll and I can only eat 1-2 pieces because the rice is super filling. I ask my sushi chefs to make my rolls wrapped in cucumber instead of rice and most places actually have a 'low carb' like roll. I can eat tempura, but only 1-2 pieces, cause I would rather have the fish. My favorite is Hamachi, tuna, salmon and I'm always up to try any specials or chef rec. I will also do a bit of sake too. Nothing is like the old days as far as quantity goes, but I just refused to give this up. In fact, it's pretty fantastic on the Protein and calories.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
