Day 4 post Gastric Sleeve Surgery - Could Use Some Advice

Recommended Posts

So I am on day 4 after being sleeved. I can not get much down. For example - I can only drink 1 oz every hour - had protien elixir w Water 2x and some gatoraide. Probably only 12 oz total today.

I feel pressure everytime I drink.

I had a great doctor who said my surgery went

perfect. Just wondering if this is normal. Hoping my stomach will allow more liquids in the days to come.

Would love your thoughts.

I am 12 days post sleeve, and I know it was hard at first for me too! I am just now able to get maybe 30-50oz in a day, and even that feels like a challenge. I would just take it slow over the next few days and allow your body to adjust. Keep trying to up the amount, and if in a few days you are still struggling, call your doctor...they are there to help!

Good luck with everything!

I had to get 64 oz down in a day before I left the hospital. It is tough in the beginning. Remember ALL fluids count, meds, Water, Protein, etc. Have you tried the sugar free Popsicles or sugar free Jello? They count also. I could eat a popsicle in minutes but it would take 30 mins to get the same in water down. You don't want to get dehydrated!

You definitely want to try and get more than 12 oz in a day, like someone else said SF popsicles do count as well. If you have trouble with cold beverages you could try lukewarm or even warm to see if that makes a difference - I didn't mind cold beverages, but I know some people have posted that they did much better with warm liquids. You definitely don't want to get dehydrated!

I second the warm beverage suggestion. I had trouble getting in the liquids but hot chocolate and broths were easier.

I am trying to break 60 oz and I am on day eleven. I am up to 58 as of today.

Yes to me that sounds normal! I too had a terrible time post op and could barely get anything down, because for me it felt like swallowing a golf ball with each sip. Eventually it got better and the good news is that you will eventually be able to guzzle again yayyyyyyyyyy! Just take it one day at a time for now smile.png and stay hydrated!

This sounds normal to me too. The first few days are tough. Warm liquids especially tea helped me. And be very conscious of HOW you drink. I noticed I was slurping tea and Soup and taking in too much air. And try standing or sitting very upright when drinking. It will get easier.

Hi Weigh2go - I am 6 days out. I am just now feeling like I can take in more fluids. I have been drinking Isopure (grape) it kinda tastes like a watered down kool-aid drink, and plain Water. I am on my 3 box of sugar free popsicles. If you have not tried them then you really should. They saved me!! I could not drink the first few days very much at all. 1 popsicle has approx 3 oz of Fluid and it only takes mins to eat. They made me feel better too.. My Doctor said I can have unlimited amount of them. They did tell me NOT to drink Gatorade but I really can not remember why.

Hang in there and hope you start getting more fluids real soon...

Thanks everyone! I am doing soooo much better now. Tomorrow is a week out & I can drink protien shakes (sipping & slowly) and it is much easier to get liquid down. Popsicles kept me alive those first days & gatoraide with protien elixir. I have "released" 17 lbs!!! I don't like saying "lost" because it sounds like I want to find it - like I lost my ring or whatever.

Anyway - thanks & I am so thankful for all of you!

Thanks so much for posting your update! I'm 4 days post-op and I can hardly swallow because I feel like there is a ton of air in my stomach that moves and causes pain every time i take a sip. I'm going to the store right now to get some popscicles!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
