Convenience Foods

Recommended Posts

What are your favorite convenience foods (frozen dinners, canned, etc.)

I discovered Dinty Moore Beef Stew has only 240 cals per half can. l/3 can seems to be plenty. Nice and soft.

I also like frozen meatballs--but they are about 100 cals each.

Some of the vegetarian frozen burgers are a good choice.

Cans of refried Beans and a package of corn tortillas is another staple I like to have on hand.

Anyone find something good out there?

I went to HEB and discovered frozen mini hamburgers, seasoned taco meats, chicken bites, etc. They are just right for bandster portions. I haven't tried them yet, but I'm hoping they will be good for lunch. Pop a few in the microwave with a vegetable.

I also keep cottage cheese, spaghetti sauce, mozarella cheese, and frozen spinanch to make a lasagna-like dish without the lasagna.

I have also found that a all beef hot dog microwaved and cut into little pieces with some Beans or veggie is another good meal.

I have big cookups and freeze stuff in lunch sized portions for myself and for Doug to take to work and little teeny ones for Eliza to take to daycare. I never cook anything without making a double batch to do this with.

Sometimes I'll eat a can of baked Beans for lunch, canned Soup, flavoured tuna etc.

South Beach Diet wraps have become a staple for me lately. I had written off tortillas because they are so chewy and just "not worth it" but the whole wheat tortillas in the wraps are great! I like the Southwest chicken and the Asian inspired wraps. I bought the turkey bacon one time but spit out so much of the bacon bits I won't waste my money again.

Also, tuna sensations? Sweet and Spicy is my fave. I add a TBS of FF Italian dressing to moisten it a bit more. I have that on salads, too. Or in a whole wheat tortilla! Good stuff.

Turkey pepperoni, microwaved until crunchy. Most of the fat cooks out and it has a respectable amount of Protein. I like mine dipped in cottage cheese or garden vegetable flavored cream cheese. Or just plain. :tea:

I've found that now, when I get hungry, it comes fast. I'll go from nothing to pain before I know what happened. A few times I've had to rely on fast food, and I get the McD's fruit & yogurt parfait. It's low fat yogurt, and I skip the fruit pieces. Less than half fills me up. It's nice to know of a "drive thru" food (because sometimes you really don't have much other choice) that's band friendly and not horrible for you.

Lean Cuisine sphagetti and meatballs. 250 calories. I use about 4 - 5 whole grain wheat crackers with the sphagetti for a total of around 300 calories.

String cheese

Laughing Cow lite cheese wedges with a few Triscuits (reduced-fat)

Marinated mozzarella cheese (OMG...it's so soft and flavorful...not anything like the hard stuff in the dairy section)

Classico basil and sun-dried Tomato sauce (pour over Flat-out flatbreads that have been baked in the oven to crisp them, add some mozz cheese, turkey pepperoni, etc...quick pizza fix; pour over hunks of lean ground beef and Italian sausage cooked with onions, peppers, and garlic for Italian chili; pour over chicken breasts or thighs and bake for an hour in slow slow slow oven, top with parm cheese)

South Beach Diet snack packs of crackers, Breakfast bars, etc.

Sweet and Spicy tuna pouches

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
