Has Anyone Been Assigned A Pre-gastric Sleeve Surgery Nurse By Their Insurance?

Recommended Posts

I'm in CA and have BCBS PPO. I found out yesterday I was pre-approved for surgery (yay!!) but they also called me to tell me they had assigned a nurse to work with me prior to the surgery. I have a call scheduled from her on Friday.

Has anyone else experienced this? I remember they had a nurse line when I was pregnant with my son and I sort-of remember them wanting me to participate in some sort of pregnancy thing (which I halfheartedly did) but I'm not sure what to expect from this.

Thanks for any shared experiences or advice!

I have a nurse case worker also. We have only talked once but she has me on the right track getting me going. We had a scheduled (phone) meeting this past monday and she went over some questions with me then let me ask all of the questions I wanted (I had a page full! lol) She also was prepared to help me make a decision on a surgeon but I'd already done that. She answered questions about my insurance and what it covered, as well as questions about my hospital stay and so on. From my understanding she will be guiding and answering questions through out my whole process and after surgery as well. Im glad b/c I like the idea of one person keeping up with me instead of a whole bunch of random people. Someone that works with my husband is having his surgery on the 21st and we have the same nurse case worker and I know she was at some of his appointments with him. I havent had any appointments yet so Im not sure how that works.

Thanks for your reply! I was worried they were going to try and find reasons to turn around and deny the surgery!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
