Nexium Problems after Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

I went to my doctor for a follow up, and I've had major acid reflux since being sleeved. He prescribed nexium 40's.... I've been trying to take them, but have been getting headaches and some "tummy" issues at night time. Anyone else have issues with nexium? Should I take it at a certain time to avoid side effects? I have Zantac too, but have been maxing out on them. I'm worried about developing kidney stones if I take to many tums or Zantac. Any advice on nexium would really help! Thanks!

The best time to take a PPI is first thing in the a.m. On an empty stomach about 30 mins before Breakfast. What kind of tummy issues are you talking about?

I take Famotadine (Pepcid) first thing in the AM and Prilosec at night, right before bed. No problems taking it that way.

On of the side effects of Nexium is headache, another is upset stomach. Both go away after about 3 to 4 days of taking it. I take 40's also and have for years but when I was taken off it in the hospital and started taking it again a week or two later, I went through the headache and upset stomach again. It passes and then when the Nexium starts working, you will swear by it. I know I do...

I don't know about Nexium, but my doc switched me to Dexilant in the morning and an OTC Zantac at night. I'm doing well with both (was originally taking 20 mg omeprazole twice a day and that wasn't doing squat).

I hear you on the omeprezole. Didn't do squat for me either. Thanks for the tips! I'll try taking it tomorrow morning and see how it goes. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
