Can You Really Get In That Much Protein Without Being Constipated...tmi I Know!

Recommended Posts

Sorry guys but I have to ask. I am struggling to get in my Protein. I was told to up it to at least 60 but more like over 100. So ONE day I decided to drink 4 of the Premier Protein costco drinks that have 30 grams each of protein. I got in 120 grams and the very next day I literally thought I would DIE. I had major bathroom issues like never in my entire life. Nothing would work. And I mean NOTHING. I thought I was going to have to get a stick of dynamite. Sorry for being so out there but it was horrifying!! I had to go to the doctor. They told me a lot of protein like that can really mess you up. Maybe my body wasn't used to it or maybe that brand of shakes who knows. All I can say is it has taken me a full WEEK to even get my body back on track. I'm on daily doses of Miralax, Fiber pills, blueberries, prune juice..whatever is powerful. I never want that to happen again. I was actually scared!! LOL...I know it sounds ridiculous but it literally frightened me to death!!

So how are you all really getting in these high amounts of protein and NOT having to live on laxatives b/c I really don't want to do that. But I've noticed that the higher the protein the faster the weight loss

I didn't have a BM for over three weeks and like you, thought I was going to end up in the hospital. laxatives and stool softeners just seemed to make it worse, as I aggravated my hemrrhoids so much that nothing COULD work. I decided to try the natural route.

I ended up stopping the costco Protein drinks -- was drinking two a day. (Each one has 25% of your daily Iron requirement, and Iron is extremely constipating to me). I started with Sunsweet prune juice or Martinelli's pure apple juice (3 oz, first thing a.m.). I also stewed some apples and ate those without skins. Once I incorporated fruits and veggies back into my meals everything slowly started moving along on its own. And I'm sure that stopping the Protein Drinks helped greatly.

Also, make sure you get 64 oz plain Water daily too.

And by the way, I substituted roasted chicken breast, turkey breast, canned tuna, white fish, FF cottage cheese, FF Greek yogurt, tofu, egg whites, etc. for the Protein Drinks. I don't have any trouble getting between 60-80 grams of Protein daily this way.

I havent had this problem thankfully, however you are right to be scared about it as Constipation can kill. it is no laughing matter. Whenever I get a little backed up I drink some almond milk or soy milk.....it will help get things moving fast. Iron will definatly back anybody up so you can also take some dss also called collace. one pill a day to start. it isnt a laxative it is a stool softener so it wont make you go more, just easier to go. helps with those who have hemroids too. good luck to you!

I have had this issue as well. Thought I was going to pop a blood vessle for sure.

I eat prunes daily. Love them. Keep things moving. Of course, Water consumption. I don't even count the liquids from the Protein shakes as I figure the Protein kinda cancels it out.

Even doing this, though, I have run into problems. That is when I reach out to MOM (Milk of Magnesia). That has worked for me.

This is what I have done to keep myself "moving right along". I always drink plenty of Water - I usually go for 80 ounces (minimum of 60 - some days approaching 100 ounces). If you don't drink enough water/fluids - it doesn't matter what else you do - you will be constipated. I get my Protein from a variety of food sources (chicken, fish, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, beef, pork, venison, seafood, etc). I only do Protein powder or a shake at most once a day. I try to eat small amounts of a variety of veggies.I mix 1 dose of Miralax and 2 packages (sticks) of benefiber either in my Breakfast smoothie or my Breakfast oatmeal. I also have been using either flax oil or ground flax seed in my diet every day. If I eat oatmeal, I mix the flax seed in it, if not, I use the flax oil in my smoothie.< /p>

The other thing that is needed, is keep moving. The more you walk and exercise, the more your system is regular.

If I don't do the things mentioned above, I have problems. When that happens, I drink milk - I am lactose intolerant to milk (not cottage cheese, cheese or yogurt). Milk gives me a case of the trots, so it fixes the Constipation problem. NOT a good solution! I try to avoid doing it.

I am also going to start working in the dried plums into my diet (a new way to market good old prunes). They will definately help. I have been trying not to eat much fruit until I hit goal weight (except when I make a fruit smoothie - fruit is a rare treat for me).

I've battled this my entire adult life. I drink a glass of Crystal Lite with 1/2 cap of Mirilax in it AND 6 prunes AND drink a ridiculous amount of liquid and I can stay fairly regular. All this and I STILL have to take stool softeners every few weeks.

Keep up whatever works for you because the diet we have DOES make it worse if you're prone to these troubles.

I struggled with it a little bit, I don't eat veggies or fruits, mostly due to preference. I tried the benefiber, stool softners, and it really didn't help much. I started taking 500mg magnesium capsules and go almost everyday, and I didn't even do that pre-op. Sometimes the magnesium can help "too much" so you may have to take a lower dose. But magnesium also helps to relax muscles, so I take it at bedtime and next day I go with no problem, and the added benefit is it seems to help me relax and get good sleep. Good luck on finding what works for you, I know it can cause some anxiety!

:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
