Do You Take Acid Reducer After Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

After the surgery, do people post-op take an acid reducer everyday?

Yes, I was started out with Nexium. I took those until I ran out and never felt it worked all that great, so I gave Prilosec a try. It worked much much better but felt I should still try out some others to see if I can get better results. I went on Prevacid and that was worse for me than Nexium. So I tried Zegerid which is just Prilosec with some type of powdery substance that is supposed to help with extra absorption. It works perfectly for me. I never have acid issues as long as I'm taking these as prescribed. Likely I will never be able to get off them because I've tried and my acid acts up. I got acid reflux from my lap band and has never gone away sadly. All I can do is try to do my best to prevent it.

Good luck!

Prilosec works for me - once a day, but since I had a hernia repair, my surgeon thinks I can stop taking a ppi after about 3 months out from being sleeved. I have taken Prilosec for many years. It works best for me if taken in the morning 30 mins. to 1 hr. prior to eating and I don't lay down after I take it. The med has to hit the stomach before it works to prevent reflux.

I hope this helps.

I take Protonix. I tried to go off of it. I was off it for about six months and I had acid problems the entire time. I thought my body would adjust, and I'd be able to do without

it eventually.

Now I take it every other day and that works great.

Before surgery I had indigestion and acid refux real bad for years. I used to eat rolaids and tums all the time. I thought that after surgery by losing the weight and eating right would eliminate this, it did not. I did not have it as bad but it was still there so I still popped rolaids or tums when it acted up. My wife has been on Omeprazole ( Prilosec generic) for years and she never has any issues. I decided to give it a try. I take 1 20mg pill every morning and since I have started, I have not had a hint of indigestion, heartburn or acid reflux. This stuff is amazing. I get 42 tablets at Sams Club for 16.00 so it lasts me about a month and a half. It is worth every penny. I tried just cheap acid reducer pills before I started on these and they did not work. I feel great and have no issues any longer with acid.

Interesting! I thought we had to have some food with it or it would cause nausea or something. Thanks for sharing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
