Has Anyone Been Sleeved In Jacksonville, Fl?

cujet - so you DID have a private room? How long after surgery did they put you in a private room? I guess in recovery is when you are in a big room with everyone else but I'm just curious about when they moved you to a private room. I'm a very private person and I would hate to be in pain and discomfort with the whole world watching.

Cujet here. My wife (mamacujo) posted in this thread, under my screen name by accident. Sorry for the confusion.

She had a private room right after recovery. I don't believe Memorial hospital has any semi private rooms in the bariatric section. I went to visit her in recovery. And after going to the recovery section, I believe remaining there for a while is a very good thing. Everybody there was very attentive to her needs, and it's very well equipped in case additional attention is needed.

Please understand, I cannot answer your questions about the surgery, as it was not me, but mamacujo that had it.

I will say this, Memorial hospital was stunningly clean, the staff was quite attentive and my general feeling about the hospital, staff and surgeon was 100% positive. They let me remain with my wife overnight, in privacy, without question. That in itself is a miracle with today's strict rules.

I had my surgery at Memorial hospital and for the most part it was great! The only problem I had was because of a specific nurse, but my second nurse made up for it because she was amazing. I DID have a private room... it looked like all the rooms were private. They were also very large and spacious. On the floor it was a mix of all types of patients (not just bariatric), but all were either medical or surgical patients. It was not ICU. After the recovery they brought me in the room and my mom was allowed to stay there as long as she wanted. She could have stayed overnight but she had to be with my little sister over night.

Overall it was not a bad experience. As someone else said it was very, very clean. I also found them to be very efficient. Things happened on time when they said they would happen and I was surprised by that.

I just had my 1st appt with Dr Hodgett who is with the Bariatric group at Baptist Hospital, downtown Jacksonville, Fl. I started looking for a surgeon a couple of years ago and looking at my options and wasnt even aware that there was a Bariatric group at Baptist until my Primary recommended the surgeons there. I went to the seminar at Memorial a year ago and was so disgusted by the fact that they had a outside agency (Novus) who you had to go thru and pay before you cld even make a appt with the Dr.and they even told me if my insurance was denied I wd lose my money. I went to my 1st seminar at Baptist in November and was very impressed with the Drs and all the research I have done shows they are excellent doctors. They also have never lost a patient. In the seminar they express to you that they will handle take care of all your filing and they provide support before and after surgery at no additional charge. Hope this info helps.

My research showed Memorial Hospital with Dr. Cywes' date=' Dr. Paul Chappano and Dr. Uchal (Reviosonal Bariatric Surgeon) both at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fl.

Both hospitals have been awarded the "Certificate of Excelence".

Has anyone had surgery here in Fl. besides Ocala?

Thanks for any advice..:)[/quote']

I am thinking of getting a sleeve at St Vincents. It is part of my insurance network. Not sure which MD.

I was very happy with Memorial :) You'll be in the new wing.. everyone has private room and they are HUGE! They were great about visitors. My mom could've stayed all night with me easily (but I have a 6 year old sister and I didn't really need her so I booted her out lol)! Also, if you have a slightly older nurse named Kim... she's the BEST!

It really is the first step! It was a day I will NEVER forget! I actually went on a whim. I decided that day to look up when the info session was... it was that night. I went and now, a year later i'm 8 months sleeved and 120 lbs down! You'll be on the loser's bench very soon!

I actually go to two... 1 at Memorial and 1 at St. Vincent's (formerly St. Lukes). I was sleeved with Novus right before they broke up, and my nutritionist went to St. Vincent's, my surgeon and a couple of the Novus employees went to Memorial. I like them both and both are open to anyone who wants to attend, regardless of where you had your surgery. St. Vincents is the first Monday of every month and Memorial is the 2nd Monday.

Florida Hospital Memorial in Daytona Beach is awesome. Hospital is new building with all the same staff as the old hospital and they are a Hospital or excellence. Dr. Birkedal and his staff are awesome. All rooms are private at this facility and the nurses on the floors are wonderful. They allow family to spend the night and they donl't chase family members out of the room at 8 pm.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
