Baby Aspirin And Heparin Daily With Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Just found out yesterday I'm 5 weeks preggo. I'm 14 months out from sleeve and have lost 138lbs! This pregnancy is a total surprise as we TTC for seven years pre-sleeve. During our years of TTC, we discovered I have MTHFR which is a blood clotting factor that can cause miscarriage (I had 2) if blood thinners are not taken during pregnancy. My sleeve surgeon has always advised staying away from NSAIDS due to risk of stomach bleeding, but now I have to take 2 heparin injections daily plus a baby aspirin which is a NSAID. Has anyone else been on this regimen of meds after sleeve? Should I be worried about stomach bleeds or just pop a PPI daily to try to protect my sleeve?

Congatulations! What a blessing! I can't help with the asprin issue, I just thought what a nice way to start my day by hearing of a baby to be born.

I chose the sleeve because (amongst other reasons) I have degenerative disk disease and often have to take Celebrex, an NSAID, for extended periods of time. My surgeon says that the sleeve is the only WLS that allows you to take NSAIDs. I would be curious to know what other surgeons tell their patients...

Slim, First, Congrats on the baby!! :)

Second, My surgeon allows NSAIDS after VSG, but doesn't encourage taking lots of over the counter meds. My pulmonary doc actually put me on baby aspirin the first time I went off coumadin and my surgeon didn't object at all. I also took Lovenox injections, which is similar to Heparin, immediately before my sleeve surgery and then three weeks later because I had a filter installed and then removed. I had DVTs before I had my sleeve, which required the filter to make sure no clots went wandering through my body because of the VSG.

If you need the Heparin to make it through the pregnancy, I think you'll probably be fine. Your surgeon and ob/gyn are the best people to make that decision and I'm certain they won't have you do something that would cause you or the baby permanent harm! :)

Congrats again!! I can't wait to see baby pics!! :)

Thanks for everyones response. I will, of course, do anything I need to do to prevent another miscarriage. I didn't know some surgeons allowed NSAIDS so this makes me feel much better! Hopefully I'll have those baby pics for y'all next August!! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
