My Breath Tastes Like The Monkey Cage At The Zoo Smells

Recommended Posts

Is this the "bad breath" everyone is talking about, I hope? I literally just woke up in the middle of the night and it tasted like I'd been licking a zoo.

And my tongue has some blackish stuff on it.

Is this ketosis?? I need to get more carbs in, if so. I know that ketosis is bad for your kidneys. Yikes!! :-(

Or am I the only one who has this zoo taste?

Even when I was in Ketosis on Atkins last year, I never had blackish stuff on my tongue. I do remember feeling like my breath was awful and trying to avoid sitting close to anyone. I think I brushed my teeth a jillion times during that.

I didn't and don't worry about my carb levels now, but there are many folks on here who do watch carbs. Hopefully, some of them will chime in with info.

"Licking a zoo?" That's hilarious! laugh.png But I know how you feel? I keep gargling and apologizing to my hubby for my breathe because I can smell it and I know it's bad. I use my electric toothbrush on my tongue to get rid of the thrush looking coating that tends to build up. You must be in the early stages of post op. I am on day 14 and I know once I'm able to have more carbs this problem will go away. But for now...all this Soup and sugar free stuff that we are having is making us go into a ketosis state....that's my guess anyways.

I had this also i think of the Protein Drinks. My huzband bought me the tongue scraper which worked well alongwith constantly brushing my teeth. Hang in there, it will get better.

Mints, gum (only if you never swallow it!!), lots of teeth brushing (and tongue too) were my friend during this stage. It is normal, and it will eventually go away.

I don't know about the blackish stuff on your tongue...I do know that some people get thrush after surgery but I believe that is usually a whitish coating. The black stuff might be worth mentioning to your surgeon just in case! Hang in there, this too shall pass.

Oh good, glad to know I'm not alone in this crazy feral-animal taste in my mouth!!

The dark stuff on my tongue might be the grape-flavored Flintstones Vitamins, in retrospect... LOL. I'll keep an eye on that just in case. I've only ever gotten a black tongue from Pepto Bismol, which is gross-looking but at least I know what that is and it's normal.

Thanks for posting this Coffee! I'm SO glad you posted this. Thank you to those of you who gave your experienced feedback. I thought I was never gonna get out of this. I have one more week of purees and then I can get some balanced meals to get rid of the dragon breath. Yay!

I had a nasty fuzzy tongue and I used a tongue scraper and dry mouth rinse. It went away in a few days. It was truly gross. Mine was purple from grape Popsicles!

Have you confirmed the coloring is due to your Vitamins? Did brushing help? If not, and your breath is still funky, you need to get to a doctor. Could be a fungal infection.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
