Wheetsin 714 Posted July 25, 2006 I haven't heard no sugar as a rule other than pre-op. Pre-op it's to shrink your liver. Long story short - the liver retains sugars, so depleting your body of sugar = smaller liver. If you've been told no sugar post-op, then my guess is it's because your surgeon/dietician advocate low carb dieting in addition to the band.
Kathi 0 Posted July 25, 2006 I am also on the "No Sugar" orders.... From what I was told is that sugar adds no nutritional value, empty calories but mostly that it causes you to crave MORE sugar each time you eat even a small amount. I do use Splenda as a substitute, my doctor says that it is great for a substitute, but I have heard other bandsters say to stay away from sugar substitutes because it makes you want sweeter items. I have not found it to be true. I am very happy with my sugar free life right now.
vinesqueen 2 Posted July 25, 2006 I too think it's because of the whole emply calorie thing. It doesn't help while trying to lose weight, and if your are going with low-glycmic index style, sugars are at the top of that avoid list. Many folks who've had something like the RNY are told to avoid sugar because they can get something called "the dumping syndrome" where their bodies just cannot tollerate some foods. Alexandra 55 Posted July 25, 2006 No one ever told me "no sugar," except in the context of telling me to eat fewer calories. Well, duh!
Jachut 487 Posted July 25, 2006 I was never told that either but it goes without saying that high sugar foods are not everyday foods. I dont really believe in low carb diets but I think there's something in the glycaemic index theory - processed white carbs - ie. sugar - just give you that whole insulin rush thing, make you crave it more, stuff up your body's metabolic/fat burning systems and basically make it very easy to get fat and stay that way. Plus sugar is empty calories and eating as a bandster is like feeding a baby - you dont waste your tiny stomach space on crap food very often. And I definitely find the more sugar I eat, the more I crave.
