I Don't Know If I'm Full!

Recommended Posts

My surgery day was Monday Dec 5. I have been sipping on fluids all day, I've had a serving of Jello, just had 1/4c of Protein shake...can't tell if I'm full! I know I don't feel hungry, but I don't feel full. Is that normal? I don't want to over do it in my new little tummy, but I am concerned that maybe my new tummy is too big! sad.png

I would take the multiple burps as a sign to stop in the very beginning. Since you are on liquids, you may never really get full. If it slides right through, you don't have a chance to feel fullness. Just keep sipping and you won't hurt yourself. And, don't worry, when you start solids and mushies, you will be shocked at how quickly you fill up. I could only get down the equivalent of 2 tablespoons of food - and that took 20 minutes!!!! You'll take 3 bites and feel like you just scarfed down Thanksgiving dinner :-)

I am 15 days out of surgery... I agree with the previous post. When I get the burps...I know I am full. That is when I stop! I am able to eat about 1-2 tbls of soft foods..like eggs, refired Beans, oatmeal and cheeses.

I struggle to get more than 48 oz of liquids a day...since we don't drink 30 mins before-during and after meals. That is 4 1/2 hours out of the day that I can't drink. So it slows me down alot. I was use to drinking 100 oz per day. I sip all day now...just to get in 46-50oz.

I know in time it will improve!

Leslie, I couldn't tell at first either. I kept getting shoulder pain and I was walking to ease that. I carried my bottle of Water with me one afternoon and was taking sips as I went. After a few minutes, I realized that I would stop and sip every time my shoulder quit hurting...and then my shoulder would start hurting again. I was assuming it was gas pain, but when I slowed down a little on the drinking, my shoulder quit hurting. So my early post-op full signal was shoulder pain.

Once I graduated to solids, I learned very quickly what full feels like. And it's NOT comfortable for me. I try to always stop before I get to full. Full means that I am going to be uncomfortable for several hours after I eat, so I try to under fill myself.

Trust me, you WILL know when you get to full! :)

i always get the hiccups when i get to a full point. i agree with the previous poster, you dont want to fill up all the way or it hurts. I learned the hard way in the begining to take it slow and give myself at least a minute between bites to make sure it wasnt the last bite i should take. one bite to many is a very fine line for us. one side of full and the other side of way to much is just a bite away for us, and then there is bad pain when we over do it.

it will get better :)

Yeah, I was on here too posting about the same thing around week one or two, as I couldn't feel if I was full in the beginning. I was worried about it and would use a little bit of food feeling in my upper tummy/esophagus as my guide since my tummy couldn't feel it. Then feedyoureye, bless her heart, told me that my stomach had been cut (duh!) and that it was most likely all numb and the feeling wouldn't come back for a while!

Well, lo and behold, she was right. I didn't wake up one morning and think, oh, NOW I feel it! It was more gradual and didn't really start to hit until about the fourth week out. I was worried cause in all of my reading/research, I had never read that you DON"T feel full...everyone was saying they feel full all the time!

But, obviously, my tummy healed, figured it's little self out, and now I have normal signals again, at seven weeks! Gosh, that sounds like so little time...feel like I have been sleeved for months and months! Shesh...sorry, that was kind of weird....just kind of hit me it's only been 7 weeks!

Good luck, honey...it will get better and it's almost kind of fun learning about your new self and your new tummy. Just take it slow and it will all work itself out!!

Thanks everyone!! I am starting to clue in, I think I can feel the fullness when I get pressure on my chest and I do start burping! It's all new in trying to figure out this new sleeve of mine. I just want to make sure I don't over do it.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
