Why No Water For 1 Hr Before Or After Meals?

Recommended Posts

It's my transition week into real food (yay!) and per my surgeons instructions, no Fluid intake 1 hour prior to eating, and no fluid 1 hour after.

Why? What is the purpose of this?

Is this rule forever?

I have my work holiday party coming up, and I find myself negotiating "do I want to eat? Or do I want fluids?", I have Breakfast with a friend every Friday and I'm also worried I'll have a lifetime of choosing between coffee or the eggs each week.

Im guessing there's a direct reason why, but I'd love to know why I'm spending hours a day avoiding hydration.

This topic will show a lot of opinions. Most say NO to Water with meals as it will help wash the food through your stomach (sleeved or not ) and allow you to eat more, sooner than if you DON'T drink with a meal. This has been a diet "tip" for everyone for years and yes it certainly CAN allow you to eat more, sooner and perhaps let you get hungry sooner.

If hunger is a problem, and you are not disciplined enough to NOT eat more than your measured portion then I would advise NOT drinking with the meal as instructed. I however, cannot do this, I absolutely MUST drink with my meals, partly because I need the Fluid (I get kidney stones and need a LOT of water) and the fact that I have a schatzki ring, a narrowing of the esophagus and the Water helps flush the food through it.

So IF you can do it, it's a good idea, if you can't then just try and limit the amount with meals if any of the above problems rear their ugly heads.

Good to know!

I was concerned it was a health or safety issue.

I've yet to feel "full" with the sleeve even when exploring solid food, it just feels a bit uncomfortable or heavy.

I would like to be able to have some Fluid around meal time, I've spent my life avoiding getting full- I can certainly handle it with the sleeve!

I was told that drinking Water with your food will make your sleeve stretch faster. I don't want that happening so will not be drinking until 30 minutes later.

YIKES! I don't want stretching, thats for sure!

In terms of getting hungry sooner, that is not a huge fear of mine- I now find I am extremely capable of avoiding food until appropriate.

That video is a good demonstration of how it all works! Thanks for sharing.

I wait 30 minutes before or after. My sleevie hurts if I drink sooner than the 30 minutes.

I may take a few sips while I eat. I don't drink a full 8 ounces during my meal. I usually get very thirsty about 20 minutes after I eat. Everyone is different.

My surgeon and nutritionist both advised it was OK to drink right up until eating. They said no drinking for 30 mins to an hour after, though. I have sipped a bit during meals and didn't notice any huge difference, I eat a lot of spicy food so I honestly sometimes need a bit of a sip to calm the fires down.

Once I accidentally took too big of a drink during eating and that was the closest I've come to vomiting since being sleeved, so for me I feel like it will always be more of a comfort issue than a concern that I'm helping my food "slide" through (though i do believe that can occur as well).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
