How Soon Off Of Ppi's/antacids After Gastric Sleeve Surgery?!

Recommended Posts

Just wondering when/if others started to wean off of their PPI's? My surgeon said at about month six. I am there now but a little fearful to stop taking them. I'm wondering what others have experienced.

My program said to only take them for 3 months, but I took them for 6 months. I stopped without any problems at all. I did not have a problem with acid reflux before surgery (unless i had about 5 margaritas and a bunch of chips).

I was on Famotidine (Pepcid) morning and evening, and Prilosec before bed. At 6 months, I stopped the evening Famotidine. Now, at 9 months I am starting to wean myself off of Prilosec. I have forgotten it a couple of nights with no problems. Now, I think about what I ate during the day to evaluate if I might need it. I am taking it about half the time now.

I stopped at nine months. I've had to take Pepcid twice since (both times because I ate something too close to bedtime) but otherwise I've had no problems.

I needed a ppi in the begining because I would get heartburn/reflux badly. After about a month and a half I no longer was getting it, so I stopped taking it. Havent had any problems with it since. I am almost 4 months out.

It varies per person, a year out and I'm still on them.

2 1/2 years out and I am still on them. I never had a problem before the surgery, but since, if I just forget to take my Prilosec in the morning, by noon I am ate up with acid. As others said, your mileage may vary.

Thanks a bunch guys! Sounds like I am going to have to try it and see. I never had problems with heart burn before surgery. It was very rare. I've done great on the PPI; never had hearburn nor feel uncomfortable after meals. But I'm going to go ahead and do every other day to start as per surgeon and see what happens. Sounds like worst case scenario I go back on but no other complications. I'm doing really well and didn't want to make any waves LOL. Thanks again to all!!!!

I stopped about 10 months out. I still get reflux sometimes but I follow certain rules for myself:

No eating or drinking 1-2 hours before bed.

No laying down after eating/drinking

Don't over eat so that acid bubbles up in your throat.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
