Gastric Sleeve Surgery Checklist, Any Thing Im Forgetting?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!!!! So after months of appointments, copays and pre-op diets, the date is finally here!!! My surgery is tomorrow, December 8th, I am so nervous/excited to start my new life. Its funny because my grandma and I have the same surgeon but are having different procedures, sleeve for me, bypass for her, and they are both tomorrow. biggrin5.gif Hoping to have the same room or at least a private room, I dont mind paying alittle extra lol. So here is my checklist, any suggestions please feel free to add, thanks!!!

  • Comfy clothes to go home in
  • Toiletries
  • Gas X Strips
  • Chapstick
  • Phone/charger
  • Nasal spray

I feel like I am leaving something out.....confused5.gif

I brought my own pillow just to be more comfy.

Also, I couldn't sleep at night so I was glad I brought along a couple of magazines to read.

Flip flops were nice because they make you get up and walk so a nice easy shoe to slip in and out of is good to have.

OH, and FACE WIPES! I felt gross after surgery and the face wipes/make-up remover wipes were a God send. They were so refreshing.

I bought Gas X Strips for after surgery and did not need them at all...I am almost 4.5 months out and still haven't opened the box.

Good luck tomorrow!!!

Do you have long hair? You may want to bring something to tie your hair back. I wasn't really doing the whole, get up and get pretty routine, so my scrunchies were a must! Good luck to you and your grandmother tomorrrow..how awesome!

I packed a pair of loose fitting elastic waist shorts and a loose fitting tee shirt (and loosest fitting pair of panties). My first walk up and down the hallway was in a hospital gown but my 2nd walk was in my shorts!!! I took a pair of crocks instead of flip flops, they were just a tad bit more comfy for me. I also took a freshly laundered soft fleece throw blanket, even though I wasn't cold at night, just having it the bed being able to smell "home" made it a little easier to rest.

Good luck tomorrow!

I brought some sugar-free halls and sf cherry life savers because my mouth was so dry after surgery.

Good luck!

A small firm pillow to use for support on your tummy when you're getting up out of bed. It really helps!

A small pillow! If you don't think you'll need it in the hospital, it will help a ton for the ride home. Use it to splint your stomach when you go over any bumps, need to cough/sneeze, or laugh. It helps with discomfort.

Honestly, the best thing I brought with me was my laptop. I didn't want to pay for TV and it was nice to have at night with a sleeping room mate. Also, don't be afraid to ask for anything you need. I definitely needed the pain medicine and don't be scared to take it.

Wear to the hospital what you want to go home in. BUT, remember, you WILL be swollen, so make sure it is nice and loose. I wore a loose shirt but my regular capri yoga pants, the pants were too snug to go around my tummy when I came home, I had to sag them a little! And bring some magazines, the wait before the surgery can be lengthy.

Good Luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
