No Straws After Gastric Sleeve Surgery...

Recommended Posts

So at first my Dr. Said no straws, but I am 3 1/2 weeks out & want to use straws! LOL! Some of the Protein Drinks will go down better with a straw I think, and I used them all the time pre-surgery due to tooth sensitivity. Do you use straws?

Sorry for posting such a simple question, but inquiring minds want to know!

My doctor didn't say anything about straws and I use them all the time.

My doctor says no straws because it allows too much air in your stomach. I miss them too but figure its a small price to pay. It would be nice for the Protein Shakes though.

To be very honest pre-sleeve i never sipped a thing and all i knew was guzzle, guzzle, guzzle. The straw became my ally post-sleeve, without it i was in a world of pain. The key to the straw for me is not to let the liquid run down and fill with air... this minimizes the amount of air you take in through the straw. POST-OP I NEVER DRINK ANYTHING WITHOUT MY STRAW... Hope this helps :)

I was also told NO straws... I have always used a straw and have always had lots of air in my stomach thus I burped A LOT!!! so I tried the no straw for awhile pre op and post op... I still get lots of air in my tummy and still BURP A TON! so I have gone back to using a straw and realized that with a straw I actually drink more. So I will just burp away and get more liquids in.

I will have to have a better reason than "you get too much air with a straw" for me to change my habit.

I have heard that before as well. To be honest, I have used a straw from day one and never had any problems. I haven't noticed any additional air in my tummy or anything else.

I love my straw.... you can't take it from me! Lol, my surgeon didn't say anything about it either, but I just tried it to see if it bothered my new tummy. It didn't. End of story.

YES for me too. I use 'em all the time.

The "too much air" reason is BS. When I suck on a straw I suck the liquid into my mouth, break the vacuum and then swallow. I get no more air then I do by drinking straight from the glass.

And, now that I think about it, while I was in the hospital, they had me sipping my drinks there with a straw.

Yah, this one cracks me up. I also used a straw in the hospital and my doctor/nut never said to not use a straw. I have used a straw faithfully since day one with my Tervis Tumbler and it's the only way I can get in enough water! I drink both ways and notice no more air either way. Think it's one of the silly guidelines myself. Most I can behind, but not this one!!

I also find it easier to drink Protein Shakes with a straw. I will usually bit down on the straw to make it as flat as possible and start sucking down a slow but steady stream of the shake. I usually end up not tasting much of the drink at all. I think overall the key is to use as small of a straw as possible, the like the ones used for stirring coffee

I LOVE my straws. It is strange because I didn't use them often pre-op. I have a box of straws on my desk at work and in my kitchen at home. I find that I get my liquids in much better if I am sipping out of a straw all day.

I used a straw pretty much right away. My surgeon just said not to suck up any air at the end of the drink, and it was like duh LOL, and let me tell you that helped me to drink up and stay hydrated.

I've never been a straw user but I accidentally used one the first time we went out to eat after surgery and still do use them whenever I am presented with a straw. I have had no air problems with them at all.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
