Does everyone get a Drain after Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

i hope i'm posting in the right place.

i want to ask you all since you've already been sleeved, does everyone get a drain ,noidea.gif

i thought the answer was yes - but i think i heard from the nurse briefly that the dr. doesn't use drains. Is that possible?

My DOS is 12/15/11 - can't wait

my dr doesn't use drains on sleeves, only on bypass.

This is a tricky question because I've read where some people don't get one, others have one and have it removed before they wake up, some people keep it for a few days and others (me included) keep it about a week post op. I think this varies depending on the doctor. Not much help I know lol

No drain at all, and no sutures on the outside (as I am discovering, now that the scabs are starting to peel off). My incisions were closed with adhesive and I woke up with five regular-sized band-aids on my stomach.

i didn;t have one, i woke up in my room with my incision medically super glued together and the biggest one had a band-aid on it.

I didnt have a drain either. Not all doctors use drains. You would have to ask your surgeon if he is going to use a drain and how long they keep it in. Good luck!

I did have one. As others said, I guess it depends on the surgeon. It wasn't really a big deal though, in my opinion.

Usually not, because there is not all that much drainage with this procedure and there is a higher risk in my opinion as a nurse to have a reverse chance of bacteria going in...

Thanx for the great responses. i was afraid my dr. was the only one not performing without a drain, relieves me to know thats not the case.

I can figure what a drain is, don't really understand why a dr. would not use, but oh well, our is not to question why.....

I had quite a bit of drainage with mine 10 days ago. Dr. Garcia kept in on for two days and we needed it to do the blue dye test to check for leaking. The drain was emptied about 6 or 8 times the whole time I had it. Even had a little clot of blood in it once. Dr. Garcia also used diabetic socks to reduce possibility of blood clotting. I hated having it but was grateful that that Fluid came out instead of being in. Seems as if it would have irritated me as the first night was a little rough.

HTH!

The drain I had for 8 days post-op wasn't that big a deal, IMO. But, some docs use them and some don't. I haven't seen any evidence that one way is better than the other. It comes down to the doc's personal preference.

My surgery is on thursday, and I was already informed by my surgeon that I will have a drain, and it will be removed on my one week follow up appt.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
