Feeling Like Food Is Stuck.....help!

Recommended Posts

OK, I need some help! Here lately, just after I eat, I feel like food is sitting in my esophagus. It feels like a lump in my throat and I feel I need to burp but can't, then I burp a lot, then I can't burp and so on until it finally dissipates. What is going on? I'm not over eating...this happens when I eat anything. Any ideas?

I feel the same thing! I am only 14 days out so I don't know if this is normal. I feel like I have to walk around and it takes about 15 minutes to dissapate. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to eat at all. I know how you feel!

The first time it happend to me I called my bariatic center.. They told me I ate something too big or too hard or too lumpy to go down. I found I was eating tuna fish too early. They told me to take a few sips of hot Water and walk around it would go down. Once it did, I've been more careful about the size of my bites and staying within the assigned food stages. i was on pureed foods and tuna should not have been on my list of foods to eat yet.

hope that helps

Are you chewing 30 times before swallowing? Are you taking one bite after the other?

I chew everything to a paste and wait at least a minute between bites ... sometimes two. I start my meal before my family and finish after them.

Just take it slow and be sure you are chewing.

SassyMoma, at 14 days out, what are you eating? Should still be liquidy kinda stuff. Can't imagine what would give you that feeling on creamies except for eating too much.

Well the first 10 days I was allowed only broth, sugar free Jello and Water. That went fine. Then after day 10 I was told I could add Protein Shakes, sugar free pudding, Soups, eggs, low fat refried Beans, low fat sting cheese and tuna fish and mashed potatoes. At this point I get in 1 Protein Shake (it takes all morning) and then I try to eat 1 other time even though I am not really ever hungry. The egg did not go down well at all. The refried beans were ok for 1 bite. When I tried Tuna I was very uncomforatble. I also tried one bite of mashed potatoes and it just sat in my throat. I have decided by body is not ready for anything other than liquids at this point. What is strange is that I fell like my sips of water are getting bigger. My doctor was not concerned and just said that was a sign that my body is healing. What were you guys eating at 14 days out. Were you not eating the things that I have mentioned? I want to make sure I am doing this right.

14 days out I was eating pureed Soups. Ham & lentil was my fav. I also had chicken veggie, too. I just blended them up and they were great (for what it was wink.png) I did have pudding and Jello, too. For everything, though, it was just a few bites. I would be doing it throughout the day, but again, just a few at a time. I stayed on this longer than I probably needed to, though. When I would try single bites of more solid foods, it didn't feel good, so I was scared to try, so I think I progresses relatively slow. But ... that is what I needed to do. I listened to my body and let it guide me. If it didn't feel right, I backed off. Eventually, I pushed myself more and more and now, 5 months out, I think everything has fallen into place. Breads still don't sit right, so I don't eat them, but last night I had Pasta for the first time (1/3 cup) and it went down well. Loving my salads, though. Mixed greens with crumbled blue cheese, tuna and honey mustard dressing. It will happen for you, too. Take it slow and your body will show you the route.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
