Did Your Skin Change After Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have been looking around and maybe I have missed it on this forum but, I am not finding information/experience from folks that suggests anyone has had a change in skin texture? Over the past week or so I have really noticed my skin feels different and definitely has moved into the dry side.

I take all my Vitamins daily, get in my Protein, Water, walking etc. Just curious if it is just me?

Appreciate any suggestions to correct as well.

Thanks everyone.

I'm always dry in the winter but yes, post op it seems to be even worse. I'm not really sure why. Perhaps because just by choosing healthier foods I'm on a lower fat diet than in the past? I take my Vitamins and do my Protein shakes (because I just don't have good sources of Protein here) but it's far worse than it's ever been. I tell my husband to grease me up like a pig after I bathe because the dry skin is actually painful (and itchy) on my arms and back.

I use a nice bath salt and I scrub with exfoliating scrub. Then I lotion up afterward. It helps. It's still an issue but it's less painful now that I'm trying to stay moisturized.

If you find a solution that's diet related, please share. I'd be willing to try it out.

I totally agree--I NEVER used moisturizer before and always had slightly oily skin. Now I know it has to have been a result of my diet. Post-surgery, eating a mostly low-fat, no-fried-foods diet, my skin is very dry, and I've been investigating all kinds of cosmetic creams and wrinkle helpers, plus body and hand lotions.... very unusual for me. Happily, it hasn't gotten painful or itchy, but yeah, MUCH more dry. And we just had to turn the heat on in the house--we're looking into getting some humidifiers so we don't both crackle and peel......

Uh oh... not good news for me. I already have extremely dry, flaky skin (especially on my face from rosacea) and I was just sleeved 4 days ago. All these factors, along with heading into Minnesota winter, spell T-R-O-U-B-L-E.

I'm getting itchy just thinking about it... if anyone has suggestions I'd be grateful...

I bought a bottle of Neutrogena Body Oil right after surgery. I take my shower in the morning, then slather the body oil on from the neck down, without towelling dry first. I let that air dry while I'm doing my hair before I get dressed. I use a facial moisturizer with SPF 15 (living in Fl, it's required). I'm seeing improvement even in my decades old stretch marks from doing this.

My heritage is American Indian, so my family normally has oily skin, but you couldn't tell looking at me right now. I'm trying to be careful about what I use to wash my skin. I use moisturizing liquid soap for my body and Shampoo for my face. My granny swore by shampoo for her face, then noxema and she died with very few wrinkles at 84. My mom followed the same routine and didn't look anywhere close to 56 when she passed away.

Staying hydrated with plenty of Water helps as well, I've found. I have a tendency to have puffy under eye circles and Water seems to help keep them under control.

Good luck with your journey!! :)

I can confirm the dry skin chage. I used to use acne control moisturizer. Now I can use the heavy Oil of Olay and my skin eats it up. I also started using a neck firming cream by Bare Escentuals. I really like it. The lack of padding and the dry skin can make the wrinkles appear more easily, but moisturizer is my friend.

Looking forward to SPring so the weather isn't battling so much with my dry face.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
