Abdominal Pain After Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

so I am 2 weeks out and have been having severe abdominal pain on the left side so my doctor did a ct scan to check for a hernia, his nurse just called and said the only thing that showed up on the scan is ovarian cysts, does that mean there was no leak? cause doesnt a ct scan check for leaks? anyway Its good news but I havnt had trouble with ovarian cysts for about 15 years, I do have pcos and endometriosis, what would cause this to come up now? any thoughts on that? thanks guys, I love this group you are all so informative and helpful

is it your lower right side?

I have PCOS aswell...when I have cysts, they hurt lower down, like period cramps.

My pain from my vsg surgery is higer up, above my belly button to my left.

I dont think a CT scan will check for leaks...? but im not sure.

Glad you dont have a hernia! Im wondering if thats what I might have....hmm...

My fibroids bother me now when they never have before. My surgeon says it's because they don't have the fat layer to protect them like before! :)

A CT will show an abscess caused by a leak but not a leak - to my knowledge. My leak had made an abscess and that showed on the CT.

A cyst in ovary can be twisted also which is called ovary torsion. Your dr. need to do ultrasound. I had to get emergency left ovary removal surgery done on dec. 1 because of twisted cyst and severe lower left abdominal pain. I am also scheduled for vsg on dec. 20. An ovary cyst can be twisted and give lots of pain. Dr. thought may be I had diverticulosis but ct scan showed cyst in ovary. Because of lots of pain, dr. decided to remove cyst and ovary with laproscopic surgery. No cancer found. Even after removing a cyst only, it can come back and give abdominal pain. I asked dr. toremove ovary also if it was possible. My vsg surgeon says it is ok to do vsg surgery in three weeks as scheduled.

Unless it is low like period cramps it is not the cysts causing the pain. If you thought it was a leak then the pain is likely not that low.

Is the pain all the time non stop? And is it up under the bottom edge of the ribcage? That is where the stomach is.

Gas is fierce after surgery - for me it lasted non stop for weeks and even now 6-7 weeks out I am still way more gassy than pre-surg on a daily basis. YUK.

Could it be gas pr Constipation pains?

The only way to definately see a leak is with a Swallow test. You drink a Fluid while they are taking xrays. The fluid shows up on the film and if there is a leak, it shows up where it shouldn't. A CT will only show an absess. I had a lead without an absess. Good luck

Im exactly one month post op and I still have pains to the upper left portion of my stomach that occur when Im bending or trying to sleep on my side. These pains seem to come when I do any movement that causes my stomach to touch anything else inside my body. 90% of the time I dont have this pain only when my stomach rubs something else in my abdomen area

I definately understand the possibility of having a leak is a scary thing! I was sitting in my garage tonight talking to my wife and some friends when I felt a "pop" in my lower stomach area. Immediately my adrenaline started going but its been about an hour since the incident and I don't feel any pain. I can imagine if I actually DID have a leak I would feel severe pain.....right? My 2 week check up is tomorrow but I'm afraid I could just be blowing this out of proportion. Could it be possibly gas? Has anybody else felt this before?

PSuggs - Probably an adhesion popping and when they do - they hurt. Adhesions happen a lot when you have any type of surgery.

I had a CT Scan this week to check for a leak and they also put some contrast dye in my IV. So since that's what my doctor said, he did a CT to check for a leak, so it must work for that. I also had an upper GI to check for blockage, not a leak the next day.

I am 6 weeks out and I too have pain in the upper left part of my abdomen. It starts with the first bites of food or thicker Protein Drinks. I do not have it every day. It is like my stomach sometimes gets behind something else and feels pinched. I have worried about leakage too, but have no fever and my blood pressure is low. On the days I do experience this pain, my kidneys ache. Any ideas?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
