The Waiting Game..until insurance approves Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

tuesday, i met my surgeon and i got a tentative date for dec 20th. today was my final 6th month appointment & im praying they submit my papers by tomorrow. i hope for a speedy approval. my insurance coordinator went home sick today so i wasnt able to sit & talk with her. :(

QUESTION: how long after your papers were submitted to insurance were you approved?

****UPDATE****

i just talked to my nurse practioner & she said all my papers were submitted. yay! :)

Do not set your expectations too high after hearing that it took one hour for the insurance company to approve my surgery. I talked with my coordinator all the time to make sure I had everything they needed and exactly what they were looking for. The paperwork was probably just a technicality. It was still very exciting to hear the "You're Approved" coming through the receiver! I didn't stop smiling that whole day!

Your day is coming. Best wishes!!

It seemed like forever for me to go through the whole process of getting approved, but all in all after they turned it over to my insurance company it only took a couple of days for them to say yes. My surgeon's office made sure that I had all the stuff done and in order before they even turned it in so that it wouldn't get denied. Good luck!!

I am sorry if I was confusing. I was not denied. I think it was because I talked with the insurance company so often, asked so many questions, and had everything exactly like they wanted it, that my paperwork was approved in less than an hour.

*****UPDATE*****

i just called my insurance coordinator. she said she has called my insurance and opened up an authorization which takes 48hrs & then they will call her & request all the forms. so its a "waiting game". she said she will give me a call next week. so im not going to panic!

really, the only thing that worries me at this point is them not approving me because i submitted weights for the past 6yrs (excluding 2008 because i didnt visit a dr) & the first few yrs i had a bmi of 38. my bmi now is 50! my bmi has ranged from 40-50 in the last 4yrs.

i sure hope they approve me. most insurances only require 24months of weight history. hopefully ill be ok!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
