Recommended Posts

I live in New York, i make 817.00 a month, and i called Fidelis, they help people get medical insurance, and they said i make too much money, how is that too much money, i give 400.00 a month to rent, then i have the rest to pay bills with, im single, i dont have any kids, and i live at home with my family but i pay rent.... can someone help me out with getting medical coverage?, i would really like to be on the ball with the lap band surgery.

well i can tell you right now that if you are overweight it will be really hard for you to find personal insurance. And it is damned near impossible to find private insurance that will cover the band. But if you do find it, make sure to let everyone else know. i know a lot of people are willing to pay what you make each month just to have the band covered.

Your best bet is to change jobs to a place that has medical coverage and can add you to their insurance.

because most private insurance companies will not insure an overweight person. you are too much liability. same thinking as why they will not insure people over a certain age. Or someone with a chronic illness or prediagnosed illness. It costs them too much. You can get around that by getting a job with a company that has a health plan. Group policies do not exclude people like that, and that way you are left with just looking for a company who has an insurance company that covers the band.

New York has guaranteed-issue individual health plans, but they're not cheap. You won't be turned down because of your weight, but if you're eligible for group health insurance you probably won't be eligible for these plans. Call Empire Blue Cross to see what they're currently offering for individuals. Or visit www.empireblue.com.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
