Losing Weight Prior To Gastric Sleeve Surgery Is Worth It!

Recommended Posts

Hi pre-sleevers!

I just wanted to encourage all of you to LOSE as much as you can now before your sleeve! These were the same words my surgeon spoke to me and it was the best thing I could have done prior to surgery.

I have lost a total of 90 lbs. from my peak weight. I lost 30 lbs. prior to my sleeve. If I had not lost weight prior to surgery, I would not have reached my goal (normal BMI). MOST IMPORTANTLY, I would still be having serious knee pain, since I did not really stop having knee pain until I reached under 170 lbs.

I wish you all the BEST!!!!!!!!!!! And I'm rooting for YOU :Banane55:

Your stats are very similar to mine. Same height and currently 224. Now you have motivated me to lose as much as I can by Jan 9th!!!!

It is odd because my surgeon told me not to lose weight and I was confused by that!! Maybe because my BMI was 35?

Wow! I also had a BMI of 35 when my surgeon asked me to try and lose additional weight before surgery...I wonder why your surgeon would say that. I really think it can only help you in the end.

I don't know why. I was asking him how I should be eating for the months before surgery and if I should lose weight prior and he said that I didn't need to lose weight prior. He also doesn't require a pre-op liquid diet. I am stumped on all of that, but he has performed over 7000 bariatric surgeries, so I assume he knows what he is doing!

I just don't see how it could hurt to lose some prior. I am going to anyway. It will make me feel stronger and more prepared going in to be in the mindset.

Right! The sleeve is a TOOL. It will take you so far.

I really wish I could have ate all I wanted before and not worried about losing anything and got the same results I have now, but I'm glad I didn't take that chance :)

By the way, my BMI was 33 day of surgery, and was still able to have the surgery.

But with that said, PLEASE BE SURE TO ASK YOUR DR WHY you should NOT LOSE WEIGHT. Maybe with your surgeon/insurance/clause they WON'T do the surgery (????) and I would hate for that to happen...I'm interested to see what they say.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
