Is My Weight Loss Too Slow?

Recommended Posts

I know I dont want to lose the weight fast as it is unhealthy but I feel like more pounds should have come off by now. Here are my numbers:

May - 279 lbs

June - 284 lbs

July - 279 lbs

August 31(start of 2 week liquid diet) 279 lbs

September 14(surgery day) - 266lbs, 13 lbs lost on liquid diet

And now at almost 3 months post op(12/14) I weigh 231 lbs BUT I am down quite a few sizes. I went from a 24 in pants and am now in 18 and a 2/3x in shirts to a 14/16. I am wondering if I am losing more inches than weight? If you add together my weight loss from both surgery and pre op diet, I am down 48 lbs. I feel like it should be more because I am not eating that much. Thanks!

No. Your weight loss isn't too slow! :) You are losing weight and working your sleeve! I think the inches are as important as the pounds anyway. The fact that we are shrinking is phenomenal...and you've dropped several sizes already. Good job! :)

The pace isn't nearly as important as the direction. You're doing great! Inches are just as important as pounds to me. Keep up the good work!

I am just a bit ahead of where you are in the weight loss department. I was sleeved on 9/12. As of today I am down 56.4 pounds from the start of my journey in January. Since I started my pre-op diet I am down 41 pounds. The last 2 weeks I have started to see the weight come off faster now that I am trying to increase my calorie consumption. I was eating 3 meals a day, focusing on lean Protein and only averaging about 600 calories a day and my body was in starvation mode and holding on to everything it could which meant my weight loss was SLOW! I mean 1-2 pounds a week if I was lucky. I am trying to get 1000 calories a day, eating four meals, spreading out my protein more so I can eat other foods as well. Amazingly, it is working. I can't exercise too much because it just defeats my extra calorie intake. It is hard for me to get in the extra calories but I am working on it.

i am at the same as you. i have only lost 44 pounds since surgery. i had it aug 16th. i see others with later dates and they have lose 60 to 70 pounds and such. i know it is coming off slowly, but i am trying not to fret, because with the slow weight loss you lose less hair, your skin has a chance to shrink as you are shrinking, and people dont gawk at you...going, omg what are you doing to yourself..and such. i havent told anybody about the surgery so it is easier to lose slowly and not draw so much attention. so see, there are benefits to losing slowly! :)

Sounds awesome to me. Try and stay positive. We all lose at different rates.

You are doing absolutely fabulous. Remember, don't compare your weight loss to others, because everyone's body reacts differently and loses differently. As long as you are eating right and exercising, the weight will come off and will do so in a healthy manner. And, as you noted, you are dropping inches as well, and that is a wonderful thing! Nothing like going shopping for new clothes because of those lost inches!

Sassygirl and I seem to be having the same experience... Aug 15th surgery and down 44#s since... I actually don't come on here very often because I don't want to feel discouraged by others losing faster than me. (I'm very competitive lol). We are doing fine though... I would never have lost any of this weight before, so I'll take whatever I can get.

it is definatly hard not to be competitive. everyone wants to get there as fast as possible. i try to just be happy for the success that i have had, and not to worry about the other stuff. no one is ever going to lose equally, cause we never eat the same things, or do the same amount of exercise or have the same genetics. so just smile and dont sweat it :)

I was sleeved 4 weeks ago and I'm only down 8lbs post op. I do drink wine on weekends and I'm wondering if that';s what's slowing me down. I'm eating regular food and mostly protien and keeping it from 600-800 cals per day. I feel hungry though. I started eating too soon, but not overdoing it. Maybe I need to eat more?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
