After surgery.. how long are you down?

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are having the lap band on a thursday the 27th and we have to have someone take care of our 10 month old little girl. How long before we should be feeling ok and can have her back around with out being tired and really sore?

The doctor said saturday we should be up walking and getting around good..seems really soon!?

thanks

Mark

Hi! Every doctor is different, some think you can get up and running right away, some want you to rest and concentrate on hydrating yourself and drinking your Protein for your system to heal properly after the surgery. My doctor asked me to take 1 wk off of work. And I cannot lift my son (26pnds) for 6 weeks. Now, I dont think I'll last that long without picking up my son.. but that's what he recommended. It's all going to depend on how you guys feel after surgery. But remember: Don't over do it!!!!!!! Good luck!!!! Let us know how you do!!!

I was taking care of my two children the day after the surgery; well, to the extent that I took them to daycare that morning. ;)

Seems to me a 10-mo-old isn't that strenuous to care for, so unless the baby is already mobile and needs to be chased I'd say you'll be good to go the following day. Especially since there are two of you. Congratulations on your banding and good luck!!

I was up walking the halls within an hour of my surgery. I got my kids back (3 and 4) about 4 days after surgery. I would say a week would be good for you, but only as long as you really do take it easy, rest a lot, get your Protein and Water, and let yourself heal. no picking her up for at least 4 weeks. I have trouble just lifting a 10 pound bag of cat food right now without having pain. And i don't want to tear out my stitches.

Most likely not. DH came home the same day as his banding, spent most of the rest of that day asleep in bed, but he was up the second day some. On the couch a lot. Our Dr. told him the sooner he could get up and move around, even walk a little, the better.

well, you may spend a lot of time taking it easy, and resting, but you have to get up and move around as much as possible because you want all that gas to start moving through your system. it won't if you lay on your back the whole time. also, you want to move around because you will not be able to get a ton of hydration, and you do not want to put yourself at risk for blood clots.

I agree with Amy,

We were up walking and didn't stop an hour after surgery. I rode 4 wheelers all day yesterday and mowed the entire yard and I feel wonderful. Just don't over do it the first couple of days but I haven't been down as long with this as I was with the flu by no means.

Good luck,

Well I was down down for just a few days like 4 I think, but the day after my surgery I walked from the parking lot into Hobby Lobby and picked out fabric and walked back out, I was tired no doubt but I lived. I didnt do a lot of sleeping either I really just sat on my couch for those days. I had to walk around with a pillow to support my abdoman for a few days like maybe a whole week but no more than that. I still went to school and college with no problems except the clothes kinda bothered my incision sites. I still functioned pretty well so with some help you should be doing pretty well after about a week, although no heavy lifting for a while

I must say from experience that it was at least a two week recovery and I still have soreness almost 4 weeks later. I feel that it is so important to be realistic and take into consideration that everyone has a different healing rate. After reading about everyone's fast recovery, I literally sat and cried everday thinking that something was terribly wrong with me. I could walk around the next day, but once I arrived home it was impossible to hardly stand up or lie down...pain pain pain! It's getting better, but don't expect to be superman just in case!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
