Vitamins Bother My Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I am 4 weeks post-op. Thankfully I'm over all the nauseau and can eat everything I've tried so far. The only thing that bothers me is to take my Vitamins. I bought chewable vitamins from my surgeon's office and took them the 2 weeks before my surgery and had no problem. Since my surgery my stomach feels sick after taking them; both on an empty stomach or full. It doesn't matter if I take them with just Water or with food. I went back to my One a Day brand and cut them into tiny pieces and take the little pieces throughout the day. I don't usually have any problem with them, just felt nauseau a couple of times. The chewables I bought from my surgeon's office are better and contain many more nutrients than the One a Day brand but I just can't handle them. Anyone else have a problem taking vitamins since their sleeve surgery? If so, how did you handle it?

I have the same problem, only I vomit every time I take my Vitamins. I tried them on an empty stomach, with and without Water, and different times of day. If I take them at night after dinner, half the time they stay down. I don't know what else to do. I hope you can figure something out that works for you. Good luck!

Have you tried Flintstones? They are milder and taste just like I remember :biggrin5: . Maybe they would also be easier on your sleeve. There are also Gummy Vitamins and I even saw gum that released the Vitamins as you chew it (sounds pretty gross to me). A lot of times you can ask manufacturers for a sample of their product and they will mail it to you so that you don't spend a fortune on vitamins you can't take.

I hope this helps...

Have you tried just letting them sit on your mouth until they dissolve? That is how I was advised to take mine by the bariatric nurse at the hospital. I don't chew them at all. I was also given a schedule. I start my day with 4 ounces of warm liquid followed by a shake prepared with milk. This is when I take my morning ones (Calcium, Multivitamin & Anti-oxidant) . After lunch I take my Iron "chewable" (must be 2 hours apart from Calcium) and after dinner the rest. I hope this helps.

I take a softgel multivitamin complete (w/ iron) - made by NatureMade. It's a pretty big pill but since it's a softgel I don't seem to have problems with it.

I have been having the same issues with my pills. Recently switched from Centrum chewable to Adult gummies from costco. Those are better tolerated by my sleeve. I have also started cutting a couple of my pills into small segments and swallowing them with yogurt. That has helped too.

chewable Centrum is my new fav. They also have a liquid version. You can also go to health food store like Whole Foods and get an organic liquid Vitamin that may work. Vitamins that are natural have gone down easier with me in the past but since I've been sleeved I stick to chewable and liquid only to be sure I keep it down. And, take it after lunch/before bedtime just to be sure!

Thankfully I haven't had much issues with it, but a few of the people at my 6 month post-op were having some problems. The NUT suggested that they mash up the Vitamin into a powder and then mix it with something easy to eat, like a bit of yogurt or applesauce. Don't know if it works or not, but seems like a good idea, and worth a try. Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
