Hungry One Day - Not Hungry The Next. How?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I am getting frustrated by this because I can't seem to find a pattern and correct what's happening. Lately I have been really hungry one day and then the next day I have to practically force myself to eat a few bites. I get the shakes before I even feel hungry.

Yesterday was a hungry day. It seemed like I was hungry every hour or so. I tried to just be hungry but my sleeve gets pi$$ed if it is empty for too long. It will double me over (I am on Nexium for the acid). I was able to eat half of a chicken breast plus peas and Edimame Beans (about 1/4 cup). An hour and a half later I was hungry and finished off the chicken. It was like this all day. If I were still tracking I would guess that I had roughly 1,200 calories yesterday easily.

Today, not so much. It is 12:30 pm and I have had the following: 1 hard boiled egg, 1 small (finger sized) strip of grilled chicken, and two baby spoons of spinach. I have been up since 4:30 this morning. I had to force myself to eat the egg and then the chicken and spinach. I'm just not hungry and a very small amount fills me up today.

Ok, so what the heck? Your sleeve capacity cannot change from day to day can it? How can I go to bed feeling hungry and wake up feeling full?

I thought that maybe it was a difference in Water intake. No, I never drink the amount I am supposed to. I am lucky if I finish a single 20 oz Powerade zero on any given day. My urine is almost clear so I guess I am getting enough fluids (I'm also almost never thirsty).

I thought it had something to do with whether or not I had a BM that day too. No again. I have one almost every day and still fluctuate my hunger.

Any ideas? It's miserable to be hungry all day long one day and anorexic feeling the next.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
