Weight Gain Before Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

i am scheduled for surgery end of December and inam zoo mad at myself because during the past 3 months I have put on 15 pounds and am at my heaviest. It's like I was trying to eat everything before I "couldn't". Well I start my 2 week pre op on Dec 14th and am hoping to drop some of this weight I put on.... Anyone else been in the same scenario?

Yes, yes & YES! I was eating anything and everything because I felt like I would never be able to enjoy it again. Instead of just a few 'last suppers' I had months of them! I gained about 12 pounds... then I went in for one of my pre-op visits & the doctor told me I had to lose it & be below the starting weight or he wouldn't do the surgery. I buckled down & made it happen. Don't feel guilty, but do stop the eating! I promise you will be able to have all the same foods, just in controlled portions & maybe not as often as you were used to. The sleeve will be there to keep you in control. Good luck!

I wish I had words of wisdom but right now I am doing the same thing. I was hoping to have a surgery date before the end of the year but my insurance and the DR. office are not following throng with what they need to do so that I can have that date. I am so frustrated with the whole process and now that it looks like it is going to be well I just don’t know when I am wanting to eat more. So I hope to do what you are trying to do and buckle down now. I wish for you the best and success.

Everyone goes through this in one way or another. Believe me though it's totally not worth it. My surgery is on the 30th of this month and looking back I wish I never did all of my "last suppers". I felt so guilty when I only lost 1 pound at a Dr.s appointment. The more work you put into this now the less weight you will have to lose and the faster you can be back to eating what you love. Obviously in smaller portions and less frequently. All I can tell you is to buckle down and get serious. If you do that all will be well and you will feel totally better about yourself. Good Luck!

OOOOOOOOOO YA!! :Banane55:

I totally gained weight during my pre WLS appointment days...I didn't really feel "guilty"...I guess it was my way of dealing with the big change coming...I even joked about a food "bucket list" to have before WLS...well that didn't quite happen, but you get the gist...BUT when that 2 week pre-op diet bell rang...it was all business!!!

surgery date: Oct 12, 2011

I totally did the same thing. I ate like I was never going to eat again. Then someone on here posted that every pound I lose before surgery is NEVER going to come back, and that totally did it for me. I started my liquid preop diet 2 days early. I am on my second day of liquids today and am starving! But...I know I will feel so much better and we CAN do it! Good luck!

I started down this same road, but stopped at 5 lbs gained. I hate that I have had to wait so many months until surgery day (3 months since original consultation) because it leaves such an opportunity for bad behavior on my part. However, January was the best timing for me and it had to be that way.

It dawned on me that I have had "one last bowl of ice cream" or "one last bag of chips" before I get serious about my diet for 20 years and that is what got me in this mess in the first place! There will never be a good starting point, so I finally realized that the time is now. I am back on track eating healthy as of last Friday. I may not lose weight in the next month, but I sure as heck am done gaining it!

Be firm with yourself! We deserve to start loving our body right now and begin immediately treating it right. This time it is really going to work, so why put off success until our surgery date? :)

I was on a rebound form a weightloss attempt - so I had lost 60 lbs on my own last year and gaining it back - at the end of that I was getting approved for surgery, so yes, I gained like 30 lbs while trying to get approved for the surgery. I also cheated some on my 1 week presrugery liquid diet. But my surgery still went ok. :)

Ohhhhhh my peeps! Not to be a downer but PLEASE TRY AND LOSE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BEFORE SURGERY! You WON'T REGRET IT! I too went a little loca and gained some weight after my options class between April and June and went from 216 to 221. Then got down to 204 the day of surgery from June to August. IT WAS NOT EASY but SO WORTH IT!

If I had not lost weight prior to surgery I would not have made my goal. You will definitely still lose, but it can totally make the difference in where you want to end up...HUGS TO ALL!

The time I started doing the required errands for the op, I was really in the mood to try and change my life. I was dieting (without external guidance, which proved ineffective before anyway) and managed to lose a few kilos. But it took me 9 months to enter the operation room, as the queue was very long. During those months I wasn't restricted yet to the low-carb diet, so I broke my diet and ate too many last meals. I regret that.

If you gained weight it might have a bad effect on your liver. In extreme cases, some surgeons refuse to operate on people who gained significant amount of weight, as it is highly possible that they suffer from a fatty liver.

i am totally amazed (and maybe a little glad) to see that i am not the only one who has gained wt. prior to WLS. I also have been having these "last suppers" - only to have gained. my DOS is 12/6/11- i am so excited. tomorrow morning i will wake up to a "self imposed" liquid diet. dr. didn't require. i will hopefully lose 3-4 lbs. Five whole days to do so before my WLS next week. I have kicked myself too much in anger over what has happened. I'm a little black and blue :cheated: its over, nothing i can do - except stop doing it - and get back on the wagon, and stay there of course w/the help of the sleeve. I'm so so so very excited, nervous, anxious, scared, but mainly excited to start my new healthier life. :thumbup1:

kathy dos - very soon 12/6/11

mxmom... I could have written that exact post. My surgery is on the 26th of Dec and since August I have gained 10 pounds. I'm starting my pre-op on the 13th of Dec and totally not looking forward to it. But it all for a good cause. The more we lose pre-op, the better.

another realization that I came too, is that I am finally ready to make a difference and change my life for the better by being healthy, confident, and break my addiction with food, thats why I decided to follow through with the appointments and follow ups and forms and insurance... :) But I realize, i am ready for that change now,not tomorrow, not next week, not on the day of surgery. (Of course, i know after surgery i will be forced too, and that is what I need to keep me on track)...but every pound here on out is closer to my goal weight....

This board has been soooo encouraging for me to get started right now!

I just want to wish everyone much success in the pre-op phase and once surgery is completed!! i can't wait !!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
