Ice Cravings

Recommended Posts

I am 7 weeks out and have intense ice cravings. I read some place that this can be a sign of anemia. I am curious if this has happened to anyone else. I read that seasoning food helps with taste and also wonder if it is due to those spices-nothing real hot-salt, pepper, chopped garlic, onions etc. As always any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hi Monty,

Ice cravings are definitely a sign of anemia. I was cronic anemia and ate ice all day everyday until I went to see a blood specialists. She gave me Iron infusions and now I can't stand ice. Please get your iron levels checked. My body does not asorb iron so I have to get it through iv and now I have more energy. I know we all are different but it's worth looking in to. I hope this helps.

you definitely need to have your Iron levels checked. I've never met anyone who ate ice constantly that was NOT anemic. Get thee to a doctor asap. It's a huge issue, especially after being sleeved because you are not going to be able to correct the anemia through diet alone.

Good luck!! :)

Thanks for your help. I will be getting my blood work done when I see my Primary Phy. when I fly home in a week.. I am not feeling tired at all,was one of my clues when I would get injections for anemia. . If anything I am not getting enough sleep. I have not seen him since my surgery so I'll have to mention both of these issues.

Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
