Question For Ladies With Pcos Who Got Pregnant After Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

Since most of the post are from 2011, I will tell my story. I had PCOS since I was 13 years old. I would get a period every few months, sometimes a few months in a row, and then sometimes I would bleed for a whole month (the dr would put me on a pill to stop the bleeding). When I turned 19, somehow I got pregnant. I had a very complicated pregnancy, high risk, antiM in my blood, low amniotic fluids around my daughter, and was induced early. A few years later I tried to have another child, and was unable to. My periods were the same, once every 4 -5 months, then bleeding for a whole month. The gyn told me I wouldn't be able to have any children anymore because my PCOS and thyroid was extremely bad. BROKE MY HEART! I thought about all the way I could try and have another child regardless of what the gyn said... finally I figured surgery may help, not only help me health wise, but help me have a child as well. I had my surgery (sleeve) on August 15, 2013 HW: 272 SW: 255, right after my surgery LITERALLY that weekend, my period started. And the became on point every month and 2 days following. Cramps were back! Bleeding normally was back! This past Feb, my fiance and I (now 27) found out that I was pregnant! My GYN/OBGYN said that since surgery my PCOS is gone, and I was ovulating normally. Currently today, I will be 16 weeks pregnant in 2 days, and I am 9 months post op tomorrow. My CW is 180, and I am still losing weight, I have yet to gain a lb... which is not what I am going for, but for some reason my belly is growing and everything else is shrinking! I am high risk again. They put me on high risk because of surgery, I still have this stupid antiM in my blood, and just incase of low fluids around the baby, although everything seems to be going great. Also, this pregnancy has been completely different than my first. I don't know if it is because I have a smaller stomach, I eat differently, gender difference who knows. This pregnancy has been extremely easy. Hardly any morning sickness, just very sleepy and I have to eat more often. But hope this helps you ladies. I know prior to surgery I was looking for answers as well.

I should of worked out more, but I would play volleyball and softball once I was cleared to work out. I lost slow, but I saw that as a good thing. I saw it .. as long as I was losing... this was a positive. The first few weeks of eating were hard. I notice I lose more when I eat a little more. I am constantly in a "starvation mode" REGARDLESS of how much I eat. Since becoming pregnant I eat every 2-3 hours. Not a lot but for some reason now that I am eating more I am losing better, good for me but the dr aren't happy about it bc of the baby/ The baby is healthy though and I am just monitored a lot more.

You are giving me hope. I have PCOS, have never been able to get pregnant. I did the sleeve because my back was wearing out due to my weight. I am so grateful and happy to have lost weight thus far and want to keep loosing weight.

My doctors are hopeful i can get pregnant after a year of weight loss. I honestly had lost hope, I don't want to get my hopes up and I am 36 will be 37 when we start trying.

Not sure what is in store for me but God i have always wanted to have kids, I am jut so afraid of getting hurt.

Hi ladies.....there is hope. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 20 always been overweight and never ovulated. It took me 8 yrs to conceive my daughter who is now 13yrs old I always told her she was my miracle baby:) After my daughter I was still not ovulating never had a period and the PCOS was just as bad. I ended up getting a divorce. I am now remarried and happy as can be. So now at the age of 37 I decided at my highest weight of 330lbs to get weight loss surgery done otherwise my husband would never have a chance to have children. I choose the Sleeve due to the issues everyone was having with the band and gastric bypass.

So lets skip ahead once I started losing weight I started to ovulate became pregnant very quickly and the Dr said it is due to all the hormones being stored in my fat cells and when you lose the fat all these hormones are released and that is why you need to be very careful right after surgery. Well on a sad note I did lose that child but once again in 2 months was pregnant we also lost that child was very distraught and emotional so the doctor suggested birth control for a few months to regulate my hormones and take a break and to not have to worry about getting pregnant. So I took his advice. I took birth control for 2 months then stopped taking it and bam once again I was pregnant but once again we lost it. That happened on July 9, 2011. As all you ladies know that PCOS can not be cured weight loss can help with many symptoms such as ovulation. But you still have the high risk of miscarriages. After each loss they have you wait to have a complete cycle before trying again and we always do...but in July we also had a trip to Vegas planned and we ended up getting pregnant AGAIN!!!! I am now just about over all this baby stuff not wanting to go through all the pain and heartache of losing all my children. So my husband and I agreed that if we lost this one we would be done. So now it is December I am now 22weeks along and baby is doing good. We know it is a little girl we will be naming her EMMA.

So now with the sleeve they do not believe that my miscarriages were connected that it is due to the PCOS. I do have to supplement with a Protein shake called Monster Milk due to no weight gain and low calorie intake. My 18 week ultra sound shows her growing right on time except for her stomach and it is a week and a half behind but my Dr believes that is due to the low calorie intake from me. And now that I am drinking this Monster Milk she should be able to catch up.

Sorry so long and please feel free to ask any questions. It has been a long hard road for us but I believe in April 2012 (same month I had my surgery done) we will have out little bundle of joy to Celebrate. Oh and by the way husband said since it is a girl we will have to try one more time:

Your story's so inspiring if you don't mind me asking how much have you lost? I'm 22 with pcos & a thyroid disorder considering VSG. I have an iud & I spoke to my gyno about the possibility of pregnancy next year, which will be the 5th year so the iud will need to come out. She broke the news that she strongly feels I'll have infertility issus & need "help" getting pregnant. Was it an easy decision for you to get surgery? Did you ever regret it? What was the hardest part after surgery? Did you have hair loss? Was it in clumps or just heavy shedding?

Hi everyone, I'm 31 and TTC 4 years. I have only had a dozen periods on my own without bc over my entire life period. I was feeling good last year when I lost about 30 lbs going vegan and I got 4 months in a row but then I stalled as soon as I gained a bit back.

In prep for my vsg (I go in tomorrow morning) I had a bunch of delays from my ins company, which caused me to be on my preop diet of 50 carbs or less per day for over 2 months. And it caused my cycles to get kickstarted back up again including ovulation and a "normal" period 4 weeks ago. Now my biggest problem is worrying whether or not AF will come while i'm in the hospital this weekend :P

I read a really good article about wls and pcps that contributed to my decision to pursue this as the primary means to grow our family.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3334389/

Long and short of it, wls generally works in alleviating pcos symptoms! (facial hair to a lesser extent, but hey I'll take it)

And it helped that the fertility doctors told me, no way are we going to do iui or ivf at your bmi! Lose weight. So now that's what I'm going to do and this time, for life!

Hi everyone!

I just came across this thread. I have had PCOs probably since high school but I was diagnosed with it about 5 years ago when my husband and I started to TTC. About 4 months after discovering that I had PCOs they found that I had endometrial cancer. (Cancer on the lining caused by PCOs). Because I never had children they treated me with birth control, D&C's and biopsies. After 1.5 years of being cancer free my gynecologist let me try to get pregnant. I was extremely overweight, probably around 260lbs. The gynecologist put me on Clomid and I believe Provera to force a period and to force ovulation. Clomid did not work for me and after trying for about 6 months I was sent to a fertility specialist. The fertility DR ran tests, did ultrasounds, and then said I don't think they did the last D&C correctly. Lets do another one just to make sure they got everything and lets make sure they use a camera this time. So they did another D&C and they found cancer again. This time they changed my medication to Megace. It's a hormone pill (not birth control) but it prevents the lining from growing. And the fertility DR suggested that I have gastric bypass because my insurance would cover it and it would be my best odds of avoiding the cancer coming back and my best odds to have my fertility back. So it took me a year to decide to have gastric bypass and about 9 months of nutritionist appointments and other pre-op requirements and finally on April 16th, 2015 I had surgery. I've lost 101lbs since then and just recently I felt some sharp pains in my lower right abdomen below my belly button and above where my leg meets my pelvis. I've been cramping since then too. But my basal body temperature has not risen. I have been on birth control but I just did some research that it may not be effective after gastric bypass because of malabsorption. How much did you ladies weigh when you were able to get pregnant? I just hit one-derland myself :) I'm at 198. Thanks in advance!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
