Paola 62 Posted November 25, 2011 My pre-op diet consists of 3 Protein Shakes (0 carb) and 1 meal for one week, and 4 Protein shakes the secod week. I have been doing the 3 shakes 1 meal for a month because my surgery was postponed at the beginning of November. Anyways, I am to the point that I hate the Protein Shake, I have to give myself a pep talk to swallow the shake once, I haven't been drinking it more than once for a while now. Is anyone else struggling with this? Any suggestions about what I can do to drink it more than once? The protein I am taking is the "Now Foods whey Protein Isolate- unflavored"
Lissa 2,631 Posted November 25, 2011 There are a ton of sugar-free syrups that you could add to change up the flavor in the shakes. If you look at the blog "World According to Egg Face", she has tons of recipes for better-tasting Protein shakes.< /p> Try mixing the powder into other drinks: coffee, broth, Soups. Maybe you could sprinkle it onto something in your meal? Good luck. You are doing great! 1 Paola reacted to this
Paola 62 Posted November 26, 2011 Lissa- Thanks for the blog tip, I have been checking it out and it looks great.
Zedsmummy 7 Posted November 29, 2011 I'm on a similar pre-op plan as you and I am drinking GNC lean shakes and GNC pro performance lean muscle meal. Both of these shakes are not completely carb free but they are quite low (3net grams). They are pretty tasty shakes I must say, but the constant chocolate/vanilla/strawberry rotation in killing me. I like variety. I've been having clear chicken broth for lunches. I've also been having 2 glasses of sugar free metamucil each day because I was having some Constipation. The metamucil is also very filling so that's usually what I have for Breakfast and a snack in the evening.
Paola 62 Posted November 29, 2011 Zedsmummy- I will try and see if I can find that brand here, I not in the US at the moment and the GNC supply where I am is limited. Thanks for the input.
Zedsmummy 7 Posted November 29, 2011 I got my shakes at my local GNC here in Canada. I just went in an asked them for the best tasking shake they had with more than 15gs of Protein. They let me taste these ones before I purchased. They do have a little bit of that protein scent when you take that first sip but I hardly notice it anymore. hunydew2262 7 Posted November 29, 2011 I'm supposed to start my pre-op diet on 12?1, but since I work nights for the next few days, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and hopefully lose a little extra. My doc provides the Protein powder and has many options. I just went for the shakes. I have four shakes per day, plus six additional servings of sugarfree pudding, yogurt, Soup, salad or veggies. Also thin oatmeal or cream of wheat. Each item varies in amount. This is pretty much my post-op diet for days 3-20 as well. I know in a week I'll probably be crying about how awful it is to be so limited in what I can eat, but I'm so excited to be getting closer to my WLS, I'm loving all of it. I think we all deserve cudos for being so brave and having this surgery that will make such drastic changes to our lives, especially knowing there is no undoing this surgery. We have decided to be the heroes in our own lives and rescue ourselves. I'm a psych nurse and I can tell you from first-hand experience that doing something like this is pretty amazing! Paola 62 Posted November 29, 2011 butterfly411- my pre op diet was supposed to be 2 weeks, with what I posted above being the first week and the last week was all Protein Shakes, but I decided to do it 3 weeks and by the time I finished the 3 weeks my surgery was postponed. Instead of eating regular food I decided to continue the pre-op diet.
LoserMama 37 Posted December 1, 2011 Also thin oatmeal or cream of wheat. Each item varies in amount. This is pretty much my post-op diet for days 3-20 as well. I wish I could have thin oatmeal or cream of wheat! I was told I can't have either in the whole post-op 3 months...I actually quite like those, the nut said those get Gummy. I think I must have the most restrictive program out there, from what I am reading :) Funny too, because the surgeons PA, who I've seen for the supervised diet visits for the last 3 months told me I wouldn't even have a pre-op liquid diet required, and that I'd have shorter periods for the various post-op phases because its sleeve, but the dietician seems to be pretty conservative. DebiC 181 Posted December 1, 2011 It's no lie-the pre-op diet and the first weeks post-op really suck. At least some allow veggies, lean meats, or Cereal pre-op while others (mine included) allow ONLY shakes pre-op. Post-op also REALLY varies from doctor to doctor. Some allow only shakes for weeks or months post-op, some have you do clear/full liquids for a month or more, and others allow soft foods at two weeks. What's important to remember is that no matter what plan you have to follow, it really is only for a short period of your life. Whatever food you are craving will still be available to you when you are ready for it. And although I am only 2.5 weeks post-op, if I ever have to see or smell another Protein shake... Paola 62 Posted December 1, 2011 And although I am only 2.5 weeks post-op, if I ever have to see or smell another Protein shake... I am tired of mine too, I have started to plug my nose, swallow it fast, and chase it down with Water and a slice of cucumber, or whatever's handy. I think I'll be ok post-op cause im planning on dumping the Protein in my Soups or whatever liquid I'm having. Pre-op I have to drink it with Water and its terrible.
