Post Op Medication Question

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 11/16 and I have prescriptions for Nexium (packet) and Carafate. I take the Nexium first thing in the morning and had been drinking liquids about 20-30 min afterward, then waiting 20-30 minutes and taking the Carafate.

My concern is I found a comment on a website about Nexium that said you should take on an empty stomach, which I do with exception of a little Water beforehand, and then wait at least 1 hour before taking food. I did not receive any special instrutions on my prescription of Nexium.

The Carafate just states to not take an antacid within 30 min before or after taking it and that is why I take it at least 30 minutes after the Nexium.

Now in another week I'll start all of my bariatric Vitamins. I cannot get my head around how I am going to space out taking Nexium, Carafate, 3 calcium citrate chewables, 2 Multivitamin Chewables, a B12, all of my Protein supplements, plus food and water.

Can someone give me their experience on timing of everything (especially the nexium and carafate) and how to fit everything into a day without having to stop what you are doing every 15-30 minutes to do food, water, medicine, or protein supplements. I mean I work from home and have an advantage in that but still I have to work and can't stop constantly. I just assumed I could break everything down to 4 or 5 events a day plus sip on water throughout the day but that doesn't even seem possible.

Hmm, you have your work cut out for you! I do the following:

Nexium in the morning with the smallest sip I can take and still get it down. Nothing for an hour or so after. Luckily, I take the Nexium when I get out the shower and then I get to work an hour after that so that is when I take my chewable Flinstones and eat Breakfast. With my mid morning snack, I have a Viactive Calcium chew. At lunch I have a chewable Vitamin C. Then with my afternoon snack I have another Viactive. I sip Water between all of those, by the way. I don't take anything at dinner but just before bed, I have a small (2 to 3 bites) snack and take the rest of my pills over the course of about 10 mins. The reason is that all are prescriptions and three of them make me nauseous. One makes me sleepy so that I sleep through the nausea.

It works for me this way. The challenge is to find what works for you. It took me three weeks or so to figure out this system.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
