I'm Sleeved And I Have Some Questions

Recommended Posts

My surgery was yesterday and my surgeon said everything went great. Now today I'm starting my liquids slowly . I'm having chest pain :( especially when I drink and stomach cramps , is this normal? My Dr checked my heart and said is ok .Could this be related to gas? Any tips on drinking the first time ? Everytime I drink feels horrible, my belly hurts and my chest :( does this gets better ?

Love your icon! It sound normal to me... just take it slow, sip sip sip. I kept baby sippy cups full of water...with 48oz measured out so I could tell when I had had the bare minimum.Warm peppermint or camomile tea were nice. Your insides were cut and stitched... and don't know what to think of you right now! The good news is it gets better every day. The chest pains could be gas... they fill you up when doing the surgery to keep everything open and not all squished up inside... the gas pains have the tendency to be felt in the chest or shoulder. Walk asap.... even a little every hour or so. My doc said walk to the mail box. Things will get better soon... welcome to the losers bench!

I'm 10 days after surgery and having the worst reflux ever. I can drink fine but only Vitamin Water. The reflux is so bad that I can only take two really small bites of Protein and then the slime comes up a lot. Can anyone give me some advice ad/or share their experience on this issue?

I love that you named your daughter Ophelia. I too plan to name my daughter after my favorite character from a book. After VSG when my PCOS is hopefully resolved I plan on having a little Scarlet. (Gone with the Wind)

Are you taking a PPI? I had chewable one prescribed for me. My doc had me on them for 6 months. Also... is the Vitamin Water a little sour? I would stick with plane water, warm peppermint or camomile tea....early out... good luck with that...

That is normal to have the stomach and chest pain when swallowing or drinking rather . It will slowly get better. I have that same thing. Now it has been 11 days post op for me and mine is lessoning by degree. You can get Georges aloe vera drink from Publix and that will soothe it .

Yes, both sound normal, acid was my main post op struggle, so the sooner you can get a prescription to deal with that the better.

Fingers x'd for you. x

I started having reflux day one after surgery when the Dr started Toradol in my IV. I was only allowed one ounce of water/ice an hour at the time so I know it was not that! The nurse had to look up the side effects before she believed me. Needless to say I have had terrible reflux since. I am taking a PPI and just starting yesterday have noticed when I need to take a new one by what time it is rather than the acid in the back of my throat. It now makes me realize that it may be correlated to me introducing herbal tea rather than Water. I find the warmth goes down so much better! Even warm water if I did not want tea.. The weather is conductive to warm beverages, thankfully. It makes sense that drinking something warm is easier for the body to handle since it is closer to body temperature and warmer is always less shocking to the healing system than cold. It may also be why I no longer favor those Protein drinks I used pre-surgery...

Lucky Lady,

Yes, PPI, proton pump inhibitors. Before surgery I took omeprazole (prilosec) but after surgery my Dr put me on famotidine. I am assuming only because the famotidine is a small tablet and the omeprazole is a larger capsule. Maybe try famotidine? Definitely contact your doctor to see what they want you to take.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
