Oklahoma And Tx Gastric Sleeve Surgeon Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Dr Nicholson was my sugeon. He heads up the bariatric practice at Baylor Plano. Plano is on the north side of Dallas and has easy acces to Interstate 35 and Highway 75 - the main arteries to Okalhoma. I recommend Dr. Nick highly. I couldn't be happier with both the surgeon and his entire staff. It took me a year of working at prep to get approved for my surgery - primarily because I was on four insurance programs during a 12 month period (my employers were sold twice and I got laid off once). Dr. Nick was a 'Center of Excellence' with all the carriers (I think that's the term). His staff person that works to identify and ensure you meet the insurance requirements was OUTSTANDING. Each of the four carriers had different requirements, and she kept me up to date with what I had to do. With her guidance, I didn't have to re-do anything for any of the insurance carriers. When I met with Dr. Nick, I was asking him the risks of problems with the surgery, and asked him to tell me in plain English what I could tell my mother so she wouldn't worry. He told me he would be happy to call my mother with me and talk to her, if I wanted him to do that. And, he let me go home after one night in the hospital. And, he didn't nickle and dime me for money over what my insurance paid. Obviously, I am a happy client of his.

Dr Lana Nelson is my bariatric dr in Moore, OK. She is located just south of Oklahoma City and operates at Norman Regional Hospital in Norman, Ok. This is all a Center of Excellence and I have been very pleased with the whole process. I had surgery Nov 15th, went there the night before and stayed at the hospitality house next to the hospital and my husband was able to stay there the 3 days I was in the hospital. She highly recommends sleeve for us who are scared of having our intestines rerouted.

I had Dr. Daryl Stewart. Fine surgeon, but HORRIBLE bedside manners, and WAY OVERBOOKS his office appts where you end up waiting long beyond your "scheduled appointment".... Don't expect to see him again after your surgery, and you may not even see him in the hospital after the surgery itself. You will see one of his assistants if you go back for post-op follow ups. I was out of state, so I will never be going back. It seems he has high turnover in his office staff which I suspect is the chaotic manner in which he runs his practice. Sometimes I guess he schedules as many as 5 surgeries in one day which I only recently found out from another patient.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
