Frustrated With Insurance!

Recommended Posts

I have been feeling a little frustrated this past few days >.<. The story goes like this, I had my doctors appointment back on July 28, I was told I needed to go down 30 pounds before surgery, and have my psych evaluation. I had my evaluation, went down the 30 pounds, and have the money for the surgery. So whats the hold up? My insurance! My dad added me as a dependent on his insurance and it has not kicked in yet. I am having the surgery outside the US in my birth country, Dominican Republic, and since I haven't been living in DR for years I didn't have insurance. My dad wants me to have insurance for the gazillion tests the doctor requires and in case anything goes wrong and I have to stay longer at the hospital.

Meanwhile I feel frustrated. I thought the insurance was gonna kick in at the beginning of November, so I started my pre-op diet of 3 Protein Shakes (with no carbs) and 1 meal. A week after staring the diet I found out that the insurance wasn't gonna kick in until December. I was gonna stop the pre-op diet, but my family wanted me to continue it even though it was only meant for 1 week. I know I sound a little whiny, but I am so sick of the Protein shakes, and so sick of waiting >.<. I just want this surgery to be done already! I thought venting would help a little.

Oh, please don't be frustrated! I know it's hard to do the pre-op diet, and for so long!!! But, you'll be so much ahead of the curve when you have surgery. Your liver will be smaller, and you will be smaller, which both mean less risk for you during surgery. You may experience a slower weight drop right after surgery, but you will have less to lose to get to goal. :) You've already lost more than me and I'm 2 months post-op!!

It's great that you are doing so awesome!! I'm looking forward to seeing you on the loser's bench! :)

Hey vent away girl!

How will be your surgeon there? Betances?

My surgeon isn't Betances, I am having my surgery at the Abel Gonzalez Center for Advanced Medicine. The doctor I have been seeing is Dr. Abel Gonzalez.

Thank you for the encouragement. My doc was worried about the size of my liver, the intelligent part of me knows I am doing the right thing, but the impatient part of me is, well, impatient! =P

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
