Got My Gastric Sleeve Surgery Date -- Small Dilemma!

Recommended Posts

I am excited, because I got my date! Yay! 12/21. But it comes with a caveat, that my surgeon will be leaving basically after my surgery for vacation, so my followup care will be with another doctor, and if there are complications, they would be handled by another doc. I know all the docs in the practice are competent, I didn't have a strong preference for one over another, other than this guy is the one who has done far and away the most sleeves in the practice. Should I be concerned about this?

Hmmm I would question why you will be taken care of one doctor (doctor #2) and handed over to yet another one (the 3rd one) if there are complications. That is what I would be uncomfortable with. If the second doctor is not trained to take care of your potential complications, then I wouldn't want him there at all.

Also, my practice has 2 doctors and one is the "guru". One is the surgeon of excellence. The other one might be competent, but he is up and coming and I only wanted the master. That is just me. I'm picky. Best wishes in whatever you decide.

All of them at this practice are super experienced, so for me its kind of "shrug" in fact -- the one who would be doing round and would be on call is the guru with the most experience, so in some ways, may be better.

Oh, I see, I think the way I worded it might have been confusing. What I meant to say is, my doc would do the surgery, another (single) doc would be the one doing the followup.

I wouldn't worry too much about it if all the docs in the practice have the same level of expertise. I've only seen my doctor once since surgery, all my calls to his office regarding any issues (minor) have been handled by his nurse anyway.

You will be fine. Since my surgery a week ago, I've seen every doctor but mine. He sent others in his place everyday and also his arnp saw me daily. I only saw him once for 30 seconds lol.

oh this is reassuring. Thanks for the votes of confidence. The way the scheduler said it so uncertainly, it made me feel like maybe there was something I wasn't thinking of. But maybe she is used to people being deeply attached to their surgeon, I just don't feel that way, they have such good experience, all of them. FavoredOne, we should exchange #'s to text each other while in the hospital and give support!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
