I'm almost 3 weeks out. I am still on full liquids for another 3 weeks. I am supposed to be worrying about getting 60 to 90 grams of Protein in and then worry about fluids. I am so not hungry and I cannot get in all my protein let alone my fluids. I find myself nauseous most evenings especially if I force myself to get all my protein in. Is this normal for being 3 weeks out?

I am only 4 days out so I don't know. But, see if you can get your dr to prescribe Phenergan gel for your nausea. It worked great for me.

As for your Protein, my experience of things I have "eaten" have been:

1 c. Swanson's beef broth = 2 g Protein

1 c. Swanson's chx broth = 1 g protein

1 ready-to-shake Meal Replacement shake from Bariatric Advantage = 27 g protein

You may be able to get some other high protein liquids from them or any other bariatric nutrition/food store. I also got some dry Soup packets & some cocoa which were all "high" protein...each packet is 15 g of protein...and the cinnamon hot cocoa is delicious! The Soups I tried were not good to me (Tomato 7 Crm of Mushroom). They were all "Health Wise" brand.

So, perhaps if you shop around, you will find some items that will allow you to make your protein goals & be somewhat pleasant to taste...just for a few more weeks. You can do this!

Hang in there! You are doing great!

Faith, Are you sure your surgeon put it in that order: Protein and then fluids? Most of my reading, and my surgeon, reverse that order. They want the fluids in FIRST and then worry about the Protein. I drank lots of broth when I was on Clear Liquids post-op and I was allowed to count the broth in my liquids count, which helped.

Your surgeon may have a different order, but we are in more danger from dehydration early on than we are from malnutrition or diseases caused by protein deficiency. However, YOUR surgeon is the expert on your condition and may have reversed that order because of co-morbidities, so s/he is the one you should listen to.

Good luck on your journey!! :)

The first two weeks was fluids then Protein. Now it's supposed to be protein then fluids. I do have nausea medicine but it will be gone by the end of next week. I have those protein things. Like for Breakfast I had protein oatmeal made with skim milk so I had 23 g of protein. I had a greek yogurt which was 14 g. I drank some of my Protein Shake but could only get a few sips in.

Just keep working on it...everyday, forget about yesterday and do your best today it will get better. Most likely your swelling is just taking a little time to go down. For me I was like 4 months out before I hit my Fluid goal and it wasnt everyday just every once in a while but I tried everyday and now I hit it most days. Good luck to you.

I'll be 2 weeks out on Monday and I'm not even close to getting my Protein in. I do make myself finish one Protein Shake per day, but it's spaced thru the day. My surgeon's nurse told me to focus on the fluids too, because of dehydration. I'm not getting all that in either, but trying very hard. So I can't really say if that's normal for you or not, but I can say that I'm sure I would definitely be nauseous if not throwing up, if I tried to get all that protein in. Bless your heart! I would call your doctor back and let them know. Maybe they can alter the recommendations or at least give you something for the nausea. Good luck to you!

fluids should always be first. dont worry if you can fit it all in right now. your stomach is still healing and you are not going to starve to death from lack of Protein. you will make it through. best of wishes your way :)

Warm liquids seem to go down better for me. And I double or triple up my Protein. For example, 8 ounces of 1% milk = 8 grams of Protein, 1 packet of carnation instant Breakfast mix - 5 grams of protein, and 1 scoop of Jay Robb's whey protein = 25 grams of protein. I mix all this together and wham, a totally of 38 grams of protein in my 8 ounce morning shake. You can add more milk to it as I sometimes do, up to 12 ounces of milk and that makes the shake not too thick and ups the protein content again.

Two shakes twice a day is 76 grams of protein. Hope this helps.

Try powering up your protein, but always make sure your sleeve is comfortable, best to you!
