Alternatives to Whey Protein?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I am just over three weeks post-op and adjusting to my sleeve. For most of that time I was suffering from horrible diarrhea. Once I cut out the Protein Drinks, I was just fine! My body might just be sensitive to the whey Protein. I am doing fairy good in getting in my protein each day (aiming for 60grams a day and usually hitting at least 50) and I am still on very soft food and doing about 500-600 calories a day.

I am just looking for any suggestions for Protein drinks that are not whey based. Please share if there is something you have found and enjoyed. We live 400km from the nearest city and I am heading in this weekend. Hopefully I can find something there. It is so much easier to hit my protein target each day with that drink!!

Aww, I wish I could help you. That is a long trip! I have not had mine done yet; I am still 3 weeks out. I have heard of soy Protein, but don't know if it will work. Good luck. Maybe you can find something.

Hi, Kara.

I'm two weeks post op, on puree now. The Diarrhea had been nightmarish, but since intergrating puree a few days ago, I've moved on to...well, just 'loose stool'. I drink one Protein shake a day, and that's in the am. I had one freind who just went through this process tell me that the diarrhea/loose stools is normal post-op, she suggested that I drink Protein in the morning, and then follow it up with a little cream of wheat or oatmeal. Tried that three days ago and that seemed to help, but then I also decided to try and use 1% milk, instead of skim or Water.

In regards to soy protein....are you lactose intolerant? If you are, it might indeed be the choice for you, but can't give you any suggestions, sorry.

I think Jay Robb may just be soy Protein but I can't remember. They sell it at the Vitamin shoppe.

Diarrhea is pretty normal post op. You might try Muscle Milk which is supposed to be lactose free, but it's whey, and see what happens. You can buy them in RTD cartons. I love muscle milk light.

It seems like you may have developed a lactose intolerance, which happens with some after WLS, and is usually (but not always) temporary. Whey Protein is often considered to be the most absorbable form, and the most desirable form of that is isolated whey protein which is lactose free. It is also the most expensive form, so it is often blended with cheaper non-isolated whey protein. If you can find a protein mix that is 100% whey protein isolate, and they do exist but you may need to go to a GNC, Vitamin Shoppe or other such store, that should work for you. As noted by others, you can try soy based protein supplements, and while they may not be considered as good as whey based products, if that's what works for you, you go with it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
