Driving after surgery

Recommended Posts

I have my date Jan.11 But my surgon is 9 hours away so he would like for me to stay there for 1 week after surgery which i don't mind. But my question is i'm thanking about driving my self so i can save money on airline tickets and a rental car. My can is a automatic so my question is do you think i will be able to drive 9 hours a week after surgery?

Thanks in advance.

I had surgery on a Friday in Mexico and when I got home on Tuesday night I drove home from my dads where I had left my car and was driving every day. As long as you aren't on pain meds you will be fine.

I also drove myself 7 hours home, 36 hrs after surgery and 20 hrs off pain meds.

Getting in and out of the car was the only real uncomfortable part.

A week out you should be fine.

from a physical standpoint, you will be fine (as long as you are off the narcotic pain pills.)

The one thing you have to think about is that you will be REALLY tired. What you might consider is breaking it up into two days. You can get a roadside hotel for less than $50, which is a lot cheaper than airline tickets and a rental care, but still allows you to take better care of yourself. Drive half the distance on day one (with breaks - you've gotta get out and stretch and walk around a bit). Stay overnight somewhere and rest up, then finish it the next day. Driving while exhausted is always a bad thing, and I really think that the last couple of hours (if you do it all in one day) will be too much.

I agree with Kami... I think you'll be fine as long as you break it up and take lots of breaks. Also, make sure you aren't on any narcotics, so check with your surgeon to see what over the counter meds you can take. Good luck and congrats! You will be on the losers bench soon :)

I'm

Surprised no one has mentioned the risk u r taking driving or even going into a car if it's not really necessary until healed due to possible accident or sharp stop n rupture to your sleeve . Be careful people.

I asked my surgeon about driving and he said that it was absolutely fine. The risk is no different whether you are the one driving or the one being driven. A sudden stop or an accident would do damage either way. Sometimes you can't avoid it. I know I couldn't. Unless you are on pain meds the surgery is fairly minor and your stomach is pretty well protected. It would have to be a very major accident to rupture it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
