Help--I am 2 weeks post op. I struggle daily to get in Proteins and liquids but do fairly well. I am allowed soft or ground food. Well since Sunday, I have struggled with foods. Example: today I drink some milk before work. I get to work and sit down and eat maybe 5 bites of mashed potatoes and gravy and some squash. I continued working. It wasn't long I felt sick. I go to bathroom and lean over and instantly some stuff comes up. It wasn't really what I ate. It was more liquid. White, slimy and liquid. I continue having to go to bathroom and do this. I come home and rest. I try to eat cheerios and some milk. I eat couple bites and then sick. I wait till later, try some broth, instantly sick. Now yesterday I felt like a million dollars. Today, I am not well. I take Prilosec 20 mg every am. I don't get sick from Vitamins, Once I puke once that day, I am doomed. I puke rest of day. I tried to take Phenagran and puked it up. I don't know if I am dehydrated, if I am eating my few bites too fast, if something else is wrong...please help. I can't stand this!!! Thanks

I suggest that you give the MILK a pass for a few days. I loved milk before surgery and my stomach cannot tolerate it now. Switch to soy or almond milk for a few months, then try cow milk again and see if you have the same bad result.

Good luck!

I could drink milk straight away, however I did the vomit thing for the first 2 months. Eventually I could naturally gage when that last bite would take me over the edge and know to stop. I have not vomited in a great long while....almost 3 months.

i had a lot of the same problems as you. it lasted for about 3-4 weeks. every once in a while i still have it happen. the slim is from your esophogus. it helps foods go down easier. unfortunatly after this surgery it also comes backup easy too. definately skip the milk for now. i couldnt handle it at all after surgery.....now 3 months out i can just fine.

good luck.

You need to add new items slowly and see what settles. What doesn't settle now may in a few months. Avoid things like cherrios and bread, they expand and don't settle well for a month or so. I agree with a prior poster, stick to soft mushies probably avoid milk until you are in month number 2.

I wasn't even allowed to TRY milk until 4 weeks out. At two weeks out I was still on an all liquid diet - Protein Drinks, Jello, popsicles, etc. I was told to introduce new foods slowly and if I couldn't tolerate a food not to try it again for at least 7 days. I suspect you are trying to advance your diet too quickly. Have you contacted your nutritionist?

I tried to drink milk with my Protein Drinks and found that I could not finish my 8 ozs. and I it was suggested that I cut the Protein Drink with Water. I was even drinking lactose free milk. For some reason the milk really bubbles up and causes lot's of gas. MIxed with water I had no problems drinking my full amount. So even though the milk went down okay. When you ate later on there was probably lot's of gas still left over in your stomach. The reaction you had is something I call 'foamies'. You just did not have any room left. It is not fun, but if you can handle gas-x strips it helps to break up the gas so that you have room for your food. It will help to keep you from having to spit up to make room.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I have not had any milk the last two days and felt GREAT!!!

This is very hard for me as I LOVE milk. I am praying this will phase will pass.

I am doing well on my journey, but I must say it is a rocky road. I have good days and bad days but I know the end result will be well worth it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
