LoserMama 37 Posted November 11, 2011 How do you get yourself past the smell and aftertaste of the powders? I am a little over a month from surgery, but had my big post-op nutrition counseling session, and got several samples of things from the dietician and also went down the pharmacy and picked up some additionals. I have some stuff I purchased in the pantry early on --body fortress brand from Walmart, I think, and the target brand as well. both are just meh. I tried the nectar strawberry kiwi today, and it tastes ok, but the smell, even with a shaker cup with a lid, just is awful, and the aftertaste...bleah. Does this get easier with time, just get used to it?
lisajxoxo 11 Posted November 11, 2011 In my opinion, there are a couple tricks ... 1) keep trying different things until you find the least offensive one 2) once you find one that is tolerable keep drinking it, because it WILL get easier or maybe we do just get used to it. 3) in the beginning I mixed my shakes in a Water bottle with a small opening because it masks the smell a bit. 4) my favorite powder right now is actually a mixture of 2 different ones put together. It gives me a lot of Protein with a decent taste. Just don't give up, keep trying things until you find the one for you! Good Luck and you can do it!
SleevedMama 8 Posted November 11, 2011 It can be exspensive, but its not forever & my food bills are cheaper. I go to a fitness store & purchase Isopure drinks, and they saved me. After surgery, I tried (and wasted) any type of shake mix but the smell and taste I just could not tolerate. There is 40grams of Protein in each drink. Maybe try a few flavors and see if they are something that agrees with you. Good luck b/c just that smell nauseated me! Lol
lilymorg 4 Posted November 28, 2011 I blend in other things with it. A vanilla powder & milk with a handful of frozen strawberries or blue berries....you can kinda convince yourself its a milkshake... 1 msboo79 reacted to this
SuperMom 33 Posted November 28, 2011 I just can't do the shakes. Have spent prob HUNDREDS of dollars and I can take a sip and it wants to come back up. Having said that for some reason really sweet stuff (of any kind) just doesn't do well after the sleeve. I can do the Protein bars. I can do the unjury chicken broth (you have to buy it online). Now I am getting my Protein from food but it is hard sometimes to get it all in. You are sooo right.....the smell and the aftertaste.........ewwwwwwwwwwwww....feeling your pain........... MsLadyKanKan 6 Posted November 28, 2011 I used to be able to do the Protein Shakes before surgery now I can't even come close to getin it in. Lordy.....I can't wait for food. OK i guess I gotta try this Unjury stuff.
HDubSleevery 25 Posted December 8, 2011 I tried at least 20 different Protein Shakes and the one that I like the most is the Jay Robb brand. I found it at my Kroger, Vitamin Shoppe, and online. It is a bit pricey, but it is worth it for something I can drink either for Breakfast or for desert. I think I will go have one now!
LoserMama 37 Posted December 9, 2011 I'll have to pick up the jay robb, too, but I have to say, the Isopure zero carb ROCKS the house. I picked up a couple at vitaminshoppe, and they were great, so I ordered a case of orange and grape from bodybuilding.com (right here in my own home town) as well as a smaller pack of the alpine punch to try it. I also got a 12 pack of the New Whey Protein bullets, figure I might be able to get those down in the early days easier since there is less volume but more protein. Those seem to have less of the whey/protein shake feel/taste/smell.
