Post-op allergy issues

Recommended Posts

I posted this originally in the November sleevers section, but then realized it might be more likely to be seen by someone with a similar issue in a more generic section. Sorry for the double post.

http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/26929-update-after-my-november-7th-surgery-having-allergy-issues/page__pid__227680#entry227680

If anyone else has been through this or has a suggestion, I would really appreciate any input at all. Thanks!

I'm allergic to lortab, the Rx you have. So, when I have my surgery in January, I know that I cannot have that Rx. It does break me out in hives, similar to what you described and I itch head to toe, like ants stinging me.

I became allergic to liquid loritab. Made the worst rash down there. Very bad. N hives on my chest. So I'm taking a different pain med now prescribed to me yesterday. In the hospital the combo of morphine and diladed made me burn n itch all over. Diladed alone seemed to b ok. Same with morphine alone. They quickly put benadryl in my iv though so i was ok.

Thanks guys. They actually figured out it was the antibiotic I was given during surgery. They gave me the wrong one, even though I made sure to tell them and also reminded them when they started my IV. I guess I'm just thankful I didn't have a worse reaction.

Coming from a nurse.....WOW That is terrible!!!!! We all make mistakes but that was a totally preventable one. Honesty I am shocked. I'm glad you did not have a worse reaction than you did!!!! I hope you spoke to someone in the hospital's administration about it.

Ancef was the name of the drug. I'm allergic to all cephalosporins, which is listed on my Medical alert Bracelet and is in all my records. I had a detailed discussion about this with my surgeon and he promised they wouldn't use anything like that, that he would order gentamicin. I had a severe reaction to Keflex over 10 years ago when I had a hysterectomy and a similar reaction as the one I'm having now when I was prescribed Cephalexin. I have lots of other allergies so that's when my PCP advised me to start wearing a medical alert bracelet. I also carry an Epi-pen.

Meggspeggs - I haven't yet, but plan to. I just found this out a little before 5:00 pm on Friday and I was so surprised I couldn't even think to ask how in the world this could have happened. Did the dr order that? Maybe I wasn't originally started on Ancef, but when it was time to switch the bags, the other one was started? I don't know, I'm just guessing right now. I will call my surgeon's nurse first thing in the morning and ask all of this before I call the hospital. My husband is pretty ticked too, because he knows how many times we mentioned it before surgery. Bottom line, although I'm itchy and a little miserable, I'm very thankful that's all that happened.

I noticed you said you have a lot of allergies…just wondering if “nickel” is one of them. I really want to do the sleeve, but I have a concern about being stapled. I am allergic to Nickel…mostly reaction occur when jewelry is worn. While I have been advised by the doctor that will be doing the procedure the staples are made of Titanium I still have some concerns. As I understand it the staples used has some level of nickel in them.

Hi lml1998, as far as I know I'm not allergic to nickel. Luckily my hives are all gone now so I hope allergic issues related to this surgery are over. If I were you, I'd definitely talk to my surgeon about your concerns. He should be able to tell you how much, if any, nickel is used. Or maybe there's an alternative? Best of luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
