Hi VSG community. Today is my 2 week anniversary & my first post

Recommended Posts

Hello. I had sleeve surgery 2 weeks ago in San Diego. It went well and I'm doing fine. Along with the sleeve, my doc had to repair a large hiatal hernia, which I guess is fairly common. I've been getting in my 64 ounces by mixing Water with Protein, herbal tea, and miso Soup. I'm also doing two 30 minute walks most days (only 1 today). Today was my first day to have soft foods and I had a soft-scrambled egg for lunch. My concern is that I didn't feel full afterwards, in fact if I had been allowed to put salt and pepper on it I think I could have eaten two eggs. I thought I was supposed to feel full - what's up?

From what I have heard you NEVER want to feel FULL just satisfied.

This early out, your stomach is still "numb" from surgery and you may not feel full. It's very important to measure everything and be strict based upon your surgeon's program. At 2 weeks out I was still on purees and liquids only, so I wasn't yet eating eggs (everyone's plan is different). I was on 2 oz of purees/liquids at that time so I was eating only cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.

At this point post-op you don't want to stress your stomach due to your healing staple line, so I would recommend measuring everything religiously.

First, Congrats on being on the loser's bench. :)

Second, it takes awhile for us to be able to feel full. Our tummies are still in shock from being split into pieces. It takes time for the swelling to go down and for use to learn what our signals are now. I never looked for "full" because I'd never felt full before. Now, I know what full feels like (unpleasant for me), so I am learning to eat what I need to be not hungry, or satisfied.

As you heal, it will be easier. You'll learn by the progression through the stages what your body's signals are now. Keep following your surgeon's plan and you will get there.

Good luck with your journey!! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
