Hello everyone! Okay, I have a question... I am on Protein Shakes for 2 weeks then puree foods then soft then normal...all time lines are two weeks. My question is what's everyone eating in these days after your surgery? I am 4 days out and I am drinking about 2.5-3 shakes a day plus some Gatorade and maybe some broth, very little about 4 ounces. Is this normal or should I be doing something else, I know I need to drink more Water....

Thanks for y'all help vsg group!

How much liquid are you actually getting in right now, including your shakes, broth, etc? I worked on the Water first, because that's what my surgeon said to do. It's super important that you keep yourself hydrated, especially in the very early days after surgery. It's more important to keep hydrated than to get Protein, truthfully.

I keep a food journal and mine shows that some days I only managed 30 oz of Water, combined with around 20 oz of Protein liquids. I haven't had any problems with hydration according to the color of my urine. If it's almost clear, then your body is hydrated. If it's darker, then you need to up the water consumption. (General you, not YOU in particular, LOL)

Try to add more water in, but it sounds like you're doing well with the protein consumption.

Good luck!!! :)

Classes of doctors are different. Mine said yes get the 64 ounces in if you can, try to at least get 32 but he knows many can't drink that much like me and I tried Water cold, warm, hot and found it needs to be iced cold for me.

During the first two weeks I had Protein shakes, broth, apple sauce, Jello, pudding, juices (though you should avoid these). By the way gatorade does not count as Water, neither does tea. Only pure water counts as water.

You need Protein, you will lose a good portion of muscle mass along with fat in rapid weight loss, you need to get your 50 to 70 grams of protein per day.

AWESOME! thanks for the input. Yea, I know about the Gatorade and tea, although while I was still in the hospital I asked one of the Dr, what would happen if I don't get all that Water down and he said if I had at least 2 32 ounces of Gatorade, I would be okay because of the electrolytes.....but he told me to get in the water. lol My dietitian though, said at this point both are important, water and Protein. Can't wait till I get to the puree phase so i can blend up some soups! LOL

My doc told me that Protein Drinks, gatorade, Decaf tea, milk, Water, Soups, crystal lite, etc all count towards your water intake. Just not drinks with caffein. I think it is the best to go with straight water too, but to start out that is almost impossible, so go with what you can do. I found peppermint or camomile tea went down nicely.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
