deanna 1 Posted July 22, 2006 Hello! I have been a lurker on this site for a few days now, and I figured it was time to jump on in! I am considering getting a lap band, but had a few questions and was wondering if anyone could help me out! I am a twenty year old female, 5'7", and weigh 245 lbs. I have polycystic ovaries, metabolic syndrome, high cholesterol, and am pre-diabetic. How do I know what may qualify or disqualify me from surgery? Also, when I was a kid, I was diagnosed with angioedema, which only showed badly once when I got a really bad sunburn. Does angioedema affect whether you may or may not get banded??? Sorry, so many thoughts all over the place! I am so proud of all of you, I have been reading about your triumphs, and it's beautiful! :clap2: I wish you all luck, and I will keep you in my prayers! Love always, Deanna
lighter02 0 Posted July 22, 2006 Hey Deanna, Welcome to the site!!! All of your medical conditions, height, and weight do qualify you for the surgery. The pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, and metalbolic problems will actually be minimized or gone after being banded. As for the angioedema, your surgeon may want you to have an eval before your surgery to make sure that your ok to go ahead, but it shouldnt rule you out. Good luck on your Quest for WLS, and hope all goes well. Did you make a consultation appt w/ a surgeon yet???
DonnaB 3 Posted July 22, 2006 I don't know what angioedema is - swelling of some sort is my guess - angio . . . heart or veins? edema . . . swelling? Hmmmm. I do know that losing weight won't hurt it WHATEVER it is! I guess the only concern is about the surgery, huh? Good luck.
lighter02 0 Posted July 22, 2006 If Im correct, angioedema is basically hives, w/ deeper swelling than typical hives.
mousecrazy 2 Posted July 22, 2006 Deanna, Many of your questions about your co-morbidities will be answered by your lapband surgeon. Unfortunately, your insurance company's requirements will also determine what will qualify you the surgery ( as in what they will cover, or not). Many of the conditions you listed will definitely be greatly improved by weight loss...I hope you will be able to have lapband surgery if that is what you want! Good luck, Cindy
deanna 1 Posted July 24, 2006 Hey guys! Thank you so much for all of your replies! I am absolutely astounded by the love and support on this board! I thank God that I found it! Lighter02, I have not yet made an appointment with the surgeon, because before you even make an initial appointment, you have to attend a free information session that he gives, so you know exactly what's going on. I am going in two weeks, and I am soooo excited! Have a beautiful night, everyone!
